Energy Commission to start observing new electrical appliance standards [Photos] https://www.adomonline.com/energy-commission-to-start-observing-new-electrical-appliance-standards-photos/ Thu, 16 Mar 2023 07:07:30 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2228363 The Energy Commission has urged importers of electrical appliances and renewable energy products to start complying with the newly passed Energy Efficiency Standards and Regulations.

Although the new law takes effect from November 2023, the commission said it is important that importers start bringing in products that meet the required standards established by it, so as to avoid being in breach of the rule. Doing this, the commission explains, will prevent a situation where retailers may be left with stocks that do not meet the requirements of the law.

The Energy Efficiency Standards and Regulation is part of efforts to prevent the country from becoming a dumping ground for some substandard electrical appliances, reduce electricity demand and cost, protect the environment and safeguard the health of citizens from air pollution caused by increased power generation. It is also to protect consumers from purchasing unsuitable appliances as well as paying unnecessarily high electricity bills.

Director of Renewable Energy, Energy Efficiency and Climate Change (REEECC) at the Energy Commission, Kofi A. Agyarko, admonished stakeholders to start using the new criteria to import to help sanitise the system, explaining that this will ensure that they do not have leftover products when the law eventually comes into effect later this year.

“The transition period ends at the start of November, so enforcement will kick in from November 2, 2023. But between now and then, we do not want them [importers] to place an order for appliances using the previous standards as the criteria, so that between now and then they will be able to dispose of what they have as we step into a new regime,” he said.

Mr. Agyarko said this during an engagement with stakeholders on the newly passed Energy Efficiency Standards and Regulations on used electrical appliances in Accra.

Responding to concerns raised earlier by some agitating retailers, he said: “It is not a matter of taking food off the table of people, but let us look at the large community, assessing the impact continuous indulgence will cause. Investors have a role to play to save the environment and the economy,” he said.

He highlighted that the decision will not only protect customers in general, but also importantly, the businesses because they would not have to invest in obsolete and substandard equipment which could have adverse impacts.

Sustainable development

He entreated the populace to consider the wider picture so that everyone can come to an understanding to assure sustainability.

“No investor will want to invest in an economy where used products outnumber new products. Even in terms of import and selling, no investor would want to do that; and that is not a sustainable way of developing the economy. Sustainably developing the economy requires improving social well-being. But will you describe what you see at Agbogbloshie as sustainable development?” he quizzed.

He added that the commission will continue to adopt alternative measures, such as town hall meetings, to intensify education to drive the fruition of the initiative.

“We may have to reconsider some of the strategies to become effective while ensuring that the exact consumer we seek to protect comes to terms with what we want to achieve,” he added.

Senior Officer, Energy Efficiency Regulation at the Commission, Kwasi Tamakloe, added that: “Going forward, a person who manufactures, imports, offers for sale, sells, stores, supplies, distributes, donates, or disposes of an appliance for use in the country shall ensure that each model of the appliance is registered with the commission and meets the Minimum Energy Performance Standard (MEPS), labelling, and information requirements”.

Aspiring Regional Youth Organiser of the ruling New Patriotic Party, Godwin Nayaw Bamiah Yombu, has reiterated the need for Ghanaians to rally behind the government’s decision to implement a 1.75% levy on all electronic transactions.

He said through the levy, the government will be able to mobilise revenue to improve the country’s road infrastructure while providing job opportunities for the teeming number of unemployed youth in the country.

ALSO READ: Godwin Nayaw Bamiah Yombu to contest for Oti Youth Organizer

He also added that the levy will help in reducing the country’s reliance on debt.

“The E-levy will provide the government with revenue to build more roads, provide more jobs and opportunities for the youth and reduce our dependence on debt,” he told Accra-based Kingdom FM.

He touched on efforts by the government to sensitise Ghanaians on the relevance of the levy and why it must be passed. In this regard, the government is also holding town hall meetings to engage citizens on the E-levy Bill and solicit the citizenry’s support.

However, the Minority in Parliament has affirmed its readiness to kick against the Bill, despite the arguments from the government.

According to the Minority, the government has failed to manage the revenue accrued from previous taxes, and thus, the e-levy will not address the country’s revenue challenges.

The Minority has also argued that if passed the Bill will make life difficult for many more Ghanaians and collapse small-scale businesses.

This last year, the Christmas tree got sponsored by Twelhum Industrial company limited, producers of Vema mineral water company as part of their commitment to reducing plastic waste in Ghana.

However, the company has introduced the new eco-Fendley plastic bottle and has partnered MCKINGTORCH Africa to produce 7 waste bottles Christmas trees with the largest one being a 20 tooter tree with a base of 7 feet and with 1300 plastic waste bottles.

This was named ‘The Verna Christmas Tree’.

The Verna Christmas trees were handwoven by over 50 volunteers each time with over 10 hours spent weaving, decorating and lighting the trees.

Excitingly, the Verna Christmas tree sponsored by Twelhum Industrial company Ltd has found its way into some amazing spaces this year as it is featuring for the first time at the Light Up Accra’ Christmas Lighting done by Jandel in partnership with selected banks and the Accra Metropolitan Assembly.

The fabrication of the trees itself has been done around a road show with sessions held at Academic City University, Aburi Girls Senior High School, Achimota School, Vim’s Dance Factory and another at Ada. The road show has allowed over 200 volunteers to participate in the sessions. The plastic waste bottles have been recovered from homes and offices over the year through a plastic waste recovery program that MCKINGTORCH Africa runs.

This project is a powerful advocacy tool as it influences the behaviour of people on responsible handling of plastic waste while making non-contaminated plastic waste available to recycling facilities and allowing women who pick waste to make decent cash on picking of plastic waste.

Why people often close their eyes before kissing https://www.adomonline.com/why-people-often-close-their-eyes-before-kissing/ Wed, 15 Dec 2021 12:26:22 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2058616 Have you ever wondered why people close their eyes before kissing? While I was growing up as an ardent fan of love and romantic movies, I used to see two adults close their eyes before kissing and it often threw me into a state of confusion as to why they did so.

There are still numerous people out there who are wondering same thing. So for the purpose of enlightenment, we are going to have a look at the reasons why people normally close their eyes before kissing.

Just sit tight and enjoy this piece while learning something new.

ALSO READ: Sex tips for keeping the spark alive in this festive season

What are reasons why people close their eyes before kissing?

1. The reason is simple and not often due to any emotional connection as many believe. According to BBC Science Focus, most people close their eyes because it’s literally impossible to focus on anything as close as a face at kissing distance as such, they close their eyes to prevent the distracting blur or the strain of trying to focus.

2. Secondly, kissing can also bring a feeling of vulnerability and self-consciousness and as such, the only way of making yourself feel more relaxed is by closing your eyes. It’s just like the habit of turning off the light before sex. There is really nothing emotional about it.

Before you fall for a married man, consider the following three drawbacks.

  1. There will be a lack of trust in the connection

You should never date a married man because you would be cheating on his wife. What do you think he’ll do if another attractive lady comes along and he betrays his wife’s trust?

8 mistakes ladies make with their underwear [Photos] https://www.adomonline.com/8-mistakes-ladies-make-with-their-underwear-photos/ Thu, 11 Nov 2021 21:20:47 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2042604 The underwear we wear in most cases can make all the difference in our health. Without taking much time explaining what an underwear is, let’s proceed to the eight mistakes we make when it comes to choosing underwear and how we wear it:

1. Too tight underwear

In addition to looking bad, tight underwear can prove irritating to the skin and vagina, especially after menopause, since after this period, the vaginal walls tend to get thinner.

2. The shape

If you wear very tight and ‘climbed’ underwear, this can cause problems with blood circulation. Furthermore, this problem can cause numbness in limbs.

Synthetic fabrics and silk: Experts say you can choose whatever material you want, as long as the crotch is covered with cotton.

As long as the vaginal area is protected by cotton, there’s no problem choosing the underwear you want. However, if you have sensitive skin, choose to leave synthetic fabrics aside and use silk only on special occasions, says experts.

Furthermore, these two tissues are the ones that least allow the body to ‘breathe’, which encourages the growth of bacteria.

4. Flossing

If you usually have infections and irritations in the vagina, don’t wear underwear. They’re an excellent means of transport for bacteria – front to back and back again. But if you’ve never had problems and are comfortable with them, keep using them.

5. Wearing underwear at night

It’s a matter of taste, but the truth is that if you don’t wear underwear at night, your body can ‘breathe’ better.

6. Walking ‘nothing’ during the day

The beginning of the night does not apply to the day – if the pants are too close to the vaginal area, it can cause irritation. If you’re wearing skirts or dresses, there’s nothing that absorbs vaginal moisture, this imbalance can lead to skin irritation. Hence it is advisable to wear underwear when going out in th day time.

7. Sweaty Underwear

Experts advise people who tend to sweat a lot to change their underwear at least twice a day. The warm, humid environment is perfect for bacteria to grow.

8. Using any detergent

The main cause of irritation in the vaginal area is laundry detergent. The tissues that your panties come into contact with are much more sensitive than your elbow’s. So pay attention to the detergent

4 ways demons get access to the human body [Video] https://www.adomonline.com/4-ways-demons-get-access-to-the-human-body-video/ Tue, 09 Nov 2021 18:23:43 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2041082 Do you know demons are spirits that live within the spiritual realm but have access to the physical? Demons have spiritual sensors, they cannot be seen through the physical eyes and they operate according to behaviour, lifestyle and spiritual sensing.

They can get access to you when they sense negative energy around you or when they recognise any bad thing inside of you that is not of God.

Demons don’t just move into your body unless they sense a vacuum. As spiritual beings which they are, they can fill and take any form and shape. A free moving demon can sense things that are not associated with God.

They go after anything that is unclean and it can be in form of acts, behaviour or thoughts.

Having said all that, you should also know that, there are ways demons get access into the human body, just to own and rule over it.

They don’t have a soul and possessing the human body gives them that soul they long desire but they use it for their selfish desires and aims.

However, here below are three ways demons target the human spirit:

Empty Vessels

What I mean by an empty vessel here simply means having no spiritual authority or power in you. Most demons seek for such empty vessels to inhabit and take control of. This is why it is important to be charged up with the word of God inside of you daily. This is the food of the spirit and you should feed it on a daily. This way the devil cannot get access into your body.

Behaviours

Demons are clever evil spirit beings. They are good observers of human nature and if they sense that the human body behaviour is not worthy of Gods presence they act on that to occupy the body. This is one major way they get access to the human body.

Any behaviour that goes against the rules and laws of God is a potential vessel for demons to inhabit. In other words, when you have bad behaviours, bad negative energy, doubts, and even having grudges against someone, it can invite demonic spirits into your body.

Unclean Spirits

This is usually the fastest way. Your spirit becomes unclean if you break the commandment of God. For example, fornication, alcoholism, prostitution, adultery and so on. All this brings about unclean spirit and they give direct access to demons to get into your body. The Bible said, your body is the temple of God and it should be kept sacred for that reason.

The kind gesture took part in some parts of Accra such as Darkuman, Chief Imam’s residence in Fadama and other popular environs.

This is something that I usually do because I know what it means to have nothing. I urge people to help others who are in need and it will go a long way to bless them in life, she told the media.

She further urged Ghanaians especially couples to plan well before they have children because most of the kids on the street were homeless due to poverty.

Akatsi Police throw 16-year-old JHS pupil in uniform behind bars… [Video+Audio] https://www.adomonline.com/akatsi-police-throw-16-year-old-jhs-pupil-in-uniform-behind-bars-videoaudio/ Fri, 05 Nov 2021 00:30:54 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2039051 The Executive Director of Child Rights International, Bright Appiah, has chided the Akatsi District Police for arresting a 16-year-old Junior High School (JHS) pupil.

The suspect (name withheld) was put behind bars while she was still donning her uniform for challenging some police officers who stormed her home to effect an arrest.

It is said that she banged the police van amid the chaos, leading to an altercation between the family and police, for which she was subsequently arrested.

This, Mr Appiah has strong reservations on considering the instances of the arrest and the offence of the child.

Per his perspective, he remarked that a juvenile trial would have been the most appropriate approach to the matter.

He alleged that the police officers fired warning shots before arresting both the wife of the suspect and the 16-year-old for banging their car.

Here’s exactly what to do and say after you’ve made a mistake at work https://www.adomonline.com/heres-exactly-what-to-do-and-say-after-youve-made-a-mistake-at-work/ Wed, 27 Oct 2021 19:00:57 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2035057 We all make mistakes at work — and it’s not a bad thing. It’s how we grow and become better at our jobs.

Maybe you missed a deadline or came to a client meeting completely unprepared. Whatever it was, the most important thing is that you take action and address the situation sooner rather than later.

Here’s how to save your reputation and recover from a mistake at work:

1. Allow yourself to feel bad.

It’s completely normal to feel embarrassed, ashamed, disappointed, or worried that you might get fired.

Accept what happened and allow yourself to take in those emotions — but not for too long. Then, take a few deep breaths and tell yourself, it’s not the end of the world.

ALSO READ: Retract and apologise for defamatory publication or I sue – Eugene…

2. Assess what happened

Pretend it was someone else that made the mistake and evaluate what happened with a calm, objective eye.

Maybe it wasn’t your fault at all, but you won’t know until you look at the situation from an unbiased perspective.

ALSO RREAD: Video of Otumfuo driving former President Kufuor warms hearts

3. Fix your mistake (if possible) and apologise

If there’s a way to fix your mistake, do it immediately. Then, let your boss know what happened and apologise. Depending on how big or small the mistake was, you can do it via email or in person.

Keep it short and get to the point: “Hi [X], I sent you the wrong sales report this morning. I’m so sorry about that. I just emailed you the correct one, but please let me know if there’s anything else I can do.”

If any of your colleagues were affected by the mistake, reach out and apologise to them as well. But be mindful of who you share the news with — not everyone in the office needs to know.

4. Have a private meeting with your boss.

The McCarthy Hill Residents Association in August 2021, went to court to place the injunction on all construction activities by the Empire Cement factory with allegations that they will be affected by air pollution if the factory is allowed to be constructed.

The court, presided over by Justice Joseph Adu Owusu Agyemang, threw out the  injunction application after the plaintiffs filed a notice of discontinuance when it became obvious that they have  no case in law against the construction of the factory.

The court went ahead to ask the residents association to pay an amount of Gh5,000 to the company for wasting the time of the court and the Directors of the company.

Lawyers for the company, after the ruling of the court, said due to the injunction application, the company had no option than to confine themselves to due process but were delighted by the ruling.

According to Empire, the Plaintiffs have done extreme damage to the company and they are seeking advice from their lawyer for the appropriate action to take against the Plaintiffs.

The McCarthy Hill Residents Association was represented by Lawyer  Anthony Forson (Jnr) whilst the company was represented by Paul U. Dery.

The court on Tuesday, September 7, 2021 ordered all operations in connection with the construction to halt until a determination is made.

An application to join the suit in support of Empire Cement before the determination of the court filed by a group from Tetegu, a community around the McCarthy Hill area was later withdrawn by them, due to what they described as certain anomalies in their application to join.

The McCarthy Hill Residents Association earlier this year raised red flag when they had a wind of the construction of the factory.

They alleged implication on the environment and the health of the people living in and around the catchment area was a concern to them if construction was permitted go on.

The Assembly Members within the Weija-Gbawe Municipal Assembly (WGMA) also on the 13th October, 2021, held a press conference to kick against the closure of the Empire Cement Ghana Limited.

According to the assembly members, the factory which was about 85 percent complete fell under government’s flagship programme, “One District, One Factory (1D1F)” policy and do not understand why it was closed down by the Environmental protection Agency (EPA)

They  called on government to investigate the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) which halted construction works at the cement factory, describing their treatment towards the company as unfair.

The factory is envisaged  to create about 13,000 direct and indirect jobs for the youth in the area when operationalised.

The Assembly member said operators of the Cement Factory had assured the Assembly and all stakeholders within the municipality that, it needed production technology and was committed to a Gh₵60,000 bond over a three-year period to be paid to the neighbouring company should it default in its operations.

These include the use of a cyclone technology and proper construction methodology to ensure an air and water-tight production environment. The company has also gone ahead to propose the establishment of an Environmental Fund where monies would be lodged, should they breach any environmental process.

Mr Oppong expressed the need to protect investors and not to sabotage “an investment that would help reduce the unemployment rate within the catchment area.”

He explained that recent untimely deaths of his members were avoidable after series of investigations revealed that most of the alcoholic beverages in the market contributed immensely to the high death rate of his members.

He said the consumption of alcohol by its members has played a significant role “in our country’s economy and it has created thousands of job opportunities for most of the youth so these two institutions must make sure that whatever alcoholic beverage that comes to the market is well vetted before they approve it.”

“We are telling FDA and Ghana Standards Authority to make sure that every alcoholic beverage that comes to the market passes through the due process before approval and if they fail to do that, we will hit the streets to register our displeasure and discontent,” he told DJ Active on Active TV in an interview.

The tribe in Nigeria where women wear leaves instead of clothes out of fear [Photos] https://www.adomonline.com/the-tribe-in-nigeria-where-women-wear-leaves-instead-of-clothes-out-of-fear-photos/ Tue, 28 Sep 2021 13:12:34 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2020907 In Adamawa State there is a particular tribe identified as the Koma tribe. They are part of the seven districts of Ganye Local Government area.

The people of Koma are in the Atlantika mountains and they also share a border with southern Cameroon. It was in the year 1961 that the Koma people were fully recognised and accepted as Nigerians.

This ethnic group, known as Koma, comprises people who dwell in the primitive era.

You would find up to 21 villages where the Koma people live in Cameroon and there are also up to 17 of their villages in Nigeria.

Just like any other ethnic group the Koma People have their own special language they speak, the language is identified as Koma language.

The language belongs to the Niger-Congo language group.

Unlike other tribes that have moved past the prehistoric era, the people of Koma still live their lives like the olden days.

They cherish their traditions so much and still practice them today. The people of Koma don’t even wear clothes like the rest of us, the men put on loincloths while the women use fresh leaves to make clothes. The men are ready to wear clothes, unlike the women who prefer leaves.

The reason why the women avoid putting on clothes is because they believe that if they do, they would make the gods angry and he would visit them with death and barrenness.

Even when going to the market these women prefer to put on wrappers over their leaves, they would then remove the wrapper once they go back to the hill.

The people of Koma have quite a lot of strange traditions, especially when they accept you as their friends.

The men have the right to share their own wives with their friends and even with their visitors.

Just like how other people welcome their visitors with Kolanuts, the Koma men welcome theirs with their wives.

One other strange belief the Koma people have is the belief that twins are evil. They see any twin birth as being evil, because of that the twins are seen as an abomination.

Before the twin babies were buried alive alongside their mothers. Such practice doesn’t really exist amongst them anymore due to civilisation.

The people of Koma belong to those rare tribes in Nigeria that are yet to embrace civilisation. They enjoy living in the old ways and they have no issues with that.

Childhood depression real; make children’s mental health a priority – Parents urged [Video+Photos] https://www.adomonline.com/childhood-depression-real-make-childrens-mental-health-a-priority-parents-urged-video/ Thu, 23 Sep 2021 07:55:59 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2019039 The founder of Purple Olive Foundation, Lambertha Senam Bensah, has urged parents to make their children’s mental health a priority as childhood depression is real.

According to her, it can begin in the classroom or even at home due to the nature of the environment they may find themselves in.

However, she stated most parents do not pay attention to childhood depression since they see it to be an issue with only adults.

She explained that children experiencing depression often feel negative about themselves, their situation, and their future.

ALSO READ: MMDCE list: Demonstrators hired – Ben Ephson

The situation, Lambertha Senam Bensah noted, can be hard for a depressed child to learn, make friends and make the most of daily life.

“A lot of children have fears and may feel depressed, especially when forced to do things, not within their reach. This can arise in academics when they are compared to students who excel.

“It becomes worse when they are made to feel inferior because they cannot meet up to the standards and academic excellence of others. But the truth is all students cannot be first in a class. Others have areas they are equally good in and need to be inspired to develop those qualities,” she urged.

Madam Mensah made the call in an interview with Adom News after the foundation donated some consumables, toiletries among others to students and teachers at Gloriousans International School at Mataheko in Accra.

The situation, she stressed, if it continues for a long time without treatment can cause children to fall behind at school, lose confidence in themselves and become more withdrawn.

“Well, the hardworking youth of Tain can continue to wrestle with General Mosquito to win power for the NPP but to dream of getting one of their own to manage the affairs of the constituency and take care of their needs is out of their dreams,” the supporters said in a statement.

They lament the government has never and may not appoint any minister, deputy minister, CEO, or any top position from Tain as they are yet to be proven wrong.

Rector reveals why old movie roles are given to young actors, actresses [Video] https://www.adomonline.com/rector-reveals-why-old-movie-roles-are-given-to-young-actors-actresses-video/ Wed, 15 Sep 2021 08:38:39 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2015330 The Rector for GH Media School based in Accra, Leslie Addo Listowel, has opened up on why many old movie roles are given to younger actors and actresses instead of old veterans in the movie industry.

Speaking at the sixth edition of the Black Star International Film Festival (BSIFF) under the theme – ‘Film for Jobs’, Mr Listowel said the young actors charge less than the old movie actors, hence producers opt for them to avoid production cost.

ALSO RFEAD: Ghanaian filmmakers dominate 2020 film festival nominations

“It’s about money. Some of the old actors aren’t paid most times. They make the films on credit then later turn around to beg for their own money which is wrong.

“Due to that they don’t accept. In other countries. Adult roles are not given to the young. It’s about time that we start paying them well. How do you act on credit? He quizzed.

On the way forward, Mr Leslie urged movie stakeholders to organise forums to allow growth in the dying movie sector.

“We should pass on the knowledge and have seminars so people will have the passion then money will follow,” he added.

Meanwhile, Philippa Bentuma Arthur, the director of the Black Star Film Festival elaborated on the need to promote African films through their initiative.

“We want to celebrate independent film makers. We take films from all over the world and we have members who will screen them so we can show them to the public… we will have masterclasses alongside. We want to promote African films especially,” she noted.

The sixth edition of the Black Star International Film Festival (BSIFF) returns with an even bigger bang, under the theme – FILM FOR JOBS.

ALSO RFEAD: Black Star International Film Festival to hold virtual concert

Meet this unique tribe in Africa [Photos] https://www.adomonline.com/meet-this-unique-tribe-in-africa-photos/ Mon, 13 Sep 2021 21:00:33 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2014597 The universe is blessed with many versatile creatures, which are unique. Mankind was created completely in physical features. But have you ever seen an individual with two toes? We will find out in this article.

The Vadoma tribe is also called Bantwana, which means “descendants or children”. The tribe is one of the oldest in Africa and happens to be the only hunter-gatherer tribe in Zimbabwe, currently living in the Kanyemba region.

In this village, marriage outside the tribe is forbidden and these two-towed human beings are in existence. They are also identified as the ” Ostrich-footed tribe”.

It is unlawful for members to marry outside the tribe as a result, the two-towed condition does not extend to other ethnic groups.

Members with the condition are not regarded as disabled persons in the community, as their toes help them climb trees easily.

The two-towed ailment is a result of the rare genetic condition called “Ectrodactyly Syndrome”.

This occurs when there is the absence of one or more toes or fingers at birth.

Their condition is genetically passed on from generation to generation, and because of that, they are not allowed to marry elsewhere apart from their indigenous people.

They cannot run, neither can they wear shoes. People of this tribe are only able to walk to hunt for games or collect food, but with little difficulty.

Medically, the condition among the Vadoma people arises from a mutation of chromosome number 7. A dominantly inherited genetic mutation survives when it has more beneficial effects, no wonder the two-towed feet help them climb trees.
