Speaking on Asempa FM’s Ekosii Sen show, he cited what he described as glaring errors in duty assessments generated by the system.

According to him, a 1.5-horsepower air conditioner was assigned a duty of 194, while a 2.0-horsepower unit attracted a lower duty of 98, questioning the accuracy of the system.

He noted that while freight forwarders are not opposed to the use of artificial intelligence to improve efficiency, the current system appears to be producing more errors than expected.

“Today, it was reported that an air conditioner with a capacity of 1.5 hp was assigned a duty charge of 194, while a 2.0 hp unit received a duty charge of 98. If there are claims of human errors, I wonder what kind of individual would make such a mistake. We are not opposed to the improvements in the industry; if these changes can expedite the release of items, that would be beneficial. However, we are not currently seeing that efficiency,” he said.

Mr Preprah emphasised the need to customise the system to suit local conditions, adding that it has yet to significantly improve clearance times at the ports.

He therefore called for broader stakeholder engagement and urged authorities to review or temporarily suspend the system to address identified challenges.

“While AI assists us in many aspects, we need to customise it to better fit our needs. It has not resolved the issue of errors. There should be comprehensive stakeholder engagement and consultation to address the existing loopholes. We recommend suspending the current process until these issues are resolved,” he added.

EOCO allegedly ransacks Maxwell Kofi Jumah’s Kumasi residence https://www.adomonline.com/eoco-allegedly-ransacks-maxwell-kofi-jumahs-kumasi-residence/ Tue, 14 Apr 2026 19:10:43 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2651425 The residence of former GIHOC Distilleries Managing Director, Maxwell Kofi Jumah, in Kumasi has allegedly been ransacked by officials of the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO).

The Ashanti Regional Communications Director of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Paul Yandoh, claimed that items including clothing, laptops and keys were taken during the operation.

Speaking on Asempa FM’s Ekosii Sen show, Mr Yandoh said he was informed of the incident and later visited the property, where he found doors broken and belongings scattered.

He questioned the conduct of the officials, alleging that heavily armed personnel carried out the operation without presenting a search warrant.

“I was informed this morning that his house was ransacked by EOCO. When I arrived, the doors were broken, everything had been removed from his wardrobe, and his keys were taken along with other items. What has happened to the normal procedure of calling people in for questioning if you need them? What exactly is going on with the targeting of former NPP employees?” he asked.

“The guns they were carrying looked like they were preparing for war. When I asked one of the officers if they had a search warrant, all they showed me was an EOCO badge. What are they even going to do with his keys? His clothes were scattered everywhere, and other belongings were taken as well. This situation is very troubling. Is the law not functioning anymore?” he added.

GUTA criticises Deputy Finance Minister over handling of customs AI concerns https://www.adomonline.com/guta-criticises-deputy-finance-minister-over-handling-of-customs-ai-concerns/ Tue, 14 Apr 2026 19:09:21 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2651340 The Ghana Union of Traders Association (GUTA) has criticised the conduct of the Deputy Finance Minister, accusing him of showing disrespect during engagements over the controversial customs AI system.

GUTA President Clement Boateng said that although traders continue to respect the Minister due to his office, the manner in which meetings have been handled has been unacceptable.

Speaking on Asempa FM’s Ekosii Sen, he noted that engagements with government over the Publican AI system have yielded little progress despite over a month of discussions.

Mr. Boateng said traders were not adequately consulted prior to the rollout of the system, adding that stakeholder engagement only began after implementation had already commenced.

He stressed that the private sector remains the engine of growth and must be provided with an enabling environment, including proper consultation on major policy changes.

According to him, GUTA has already expressed strong concerns about the system and expects government to listen and work collaboratively to address the challenges facing importers and traders.

The association has outlined plans to take further action to draw attention to the issue, insisting that the current situation at the ports requires urgent intervention.

“The Minister requested that we suspend our current action until we have a meeting with him. However, we want the government to recognise that what is happening is unacceptable. It has been over a month of back-and-forth communications, and during meetings, the Deputy Minister conducts himself as if he is addressing children. We give him the respect he deserves because of his position, but it’s clear that the private sector is the engine of growth, and there needs to be an enabling environment for it to thrive, including in trade facilitation,” he said.

“Unfortunately, all the meetings we’ve had with him have not yielded any results. We have expressed our dissatisfaction with an initiative he has introduced, and he needs to listen to our concerns. We should be able to communicate amicably to find the best path forward for all involved,” he added.

Customs AI System: We were not informed about implementation – GUTA President https://www.adomonline.com/customs-ai-system-we-were-not-informed-about-implementation-guta-president/ Tue, 14 Apr 2026 19:07:57 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2651376 The Ghana Union of Traders Association (GUTA) has expressed concern over the implementation of the new Publican AI system at the country’s ports, citing a lack of stakeholder engagement.

Speaking on Asempa FM’s Ekosii Sen show, GUTA President Clement Boateng said traders were not informed about the rollout of the system prior to its implementation.

According to him, although the initiative was announced in the 2026 Budget, key stakeholders were not adequately engaged before it was deployed.

“We were not even aware of the project’s implementation until it had already started. No one informed us. In the 2026 Budget, the Minister announced that AI would be implemented in January, which meant there should have been stakeholder engagement beforehand,” he stated.

He further noted that even during the pilot phase, stakeholders were not involved until February 1, when they were finally invited for engagement.

“At that meeting, we raised our concerns, but they only explained their intentions to fully deploy the project without addressing our issues,” he added.

Mr Boateng said concerns raised in subsequent meetings with authorities have yet to yield any concrete outcomes.

He stressed the need for proper consultation and collaboration, emphasizing that the private sector plays a critical role in driving economic growth and should be actively involved in such policy decisions.

GUTA has since outlined plans to take further action to draw government’s attention to the challenges facing importers and traders under the new system.

ADR Centre cautions against media-led dispute resolution practices https://www.adomonline.com/adr-centre-cautions-against-media-led-dispute-resolution-practices/ Tue, 14 Apr 2026 18:53:08 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2651413 The Alternative Dispute Resolution Centre has cautioned media houses and the public against the growing trend of resolving disputes on electronic media platforms without due process.

In a statement issued on April 14, 2026, the Centre expressed concern over the increasing use of live broadcast sessions to settle disputes, warning that such practices undermine established legal and professional procedures.

It noted that alternative dispute resolution (ADR), including mediation, negotiation and arbitration, requires trained and certified practitioners to ensure fairness, confidentiality and enforceable outcomes.

The Centre stressed that media-driven dispute resolution risks exposing parties to public scrutiny, reputational damage and outcomes that may not be legally binding.

It further indicated that it will take steps to address unregulated and unethical ADR-related activities, while engaging key stakeholders such as the National Media Commission and the Ghana Journalists Association to promote responsible media practices.

The Centre also urged the public to seek dispute resolution through recognised ADR institutions to ensure adherence to legal standards and best practices.

Burkina Faso increases debt, dependence on foreign aid despite sovereignty rhetoric https://www.adomonline.com/burkina-faso-increases-debt-dependence-on-foreign-aid-despite-sovereignty-rhetoric/ Tue, 14 Apr 2026 18:49:36 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2651403 Since 2022, Burkinabe leaders have consistently claimed independence from foreign aid. Official data from their own ministries tells a very different story.

At the 2023 Russia-Africa summit, Ibrahim Traoré, President of Burkina Faso, challenged African leaders when he said, “Why do our heads of state travel the world begging?” About two years later, in September 2025, on the sidelines of the 80th United Nations General Assembly, his Prime Minister Jean Emmanuel Ouédraogo echoed similar sentiments when he said, “We didn’t come to the United States to beg. We’ve moved beyond the dynamic of holding out our hands.”

The country’s leaders have said at different times that it was shameful for African leaders to keep begging the international community for financial assistance, while frowning on foreign debt as one that undermines sovereignty. Yet, Burkina Faso under Traore is now more indebted and dependent on international aid than before the coup.

Burkina Faso experienced a military coup in January 2022, when Lieutenant Colonel Paul-Henri Sandaogo Damiba ousted President Roch Marc Christian Kaboré, citing the government’s failure to contain escalating insecurity and economic strain. A second coup followed in September 2022, bringing Captain Traoré to power. In the aftermath, the military junta pledged to restore security, stabilise the country, and lay the groundwork for economic recovery. It also promised to boost agricultural productivity, improve self-reliance, and create jobs.

However, data from Burkina Faso’s Directorate General of the Treasury and Public Accounting shows that total public debt has been steadily increasing since at least 2021, rising from 5.998 trillion to 8.311 trillion CFA francs as of the second quarter of 2025—a 38.56% increase in four and a half years. According to government projections included in the explanatory memorandum of the 2026 Finance Law, it is expected to reach 8.784 trillion CFA francs by the end of 2025, representing a further increase of 9.4% compared to 2024.

Source: General Directorate of the Treasury and Public Accounting, October 2025

The external share of this debt, which is loans taken from foreign entities, represents 40.3% of the total, or 3.349 trillion FCFA, an increase of 506 billion FCFA since 2021.

Between 2023 and 2024, this external debt increased by 9%, driven mainly by multilateral debt, which now represents 89.4% of the total outstanding external debt.

Domestic debt, representing 59.7% of the total, comprises nearly 80% securities (treasury bills and bonds) issued on the West African Economic and Monetary Union (WAEMU) sub-regional financial market. It amounted to 4.962 trillion FCFA in the second quarter of 2025, compared to 3.155 trillion FCFA in 2021.

Source: General Directorate of the Treasury and Public Accounting, October 2025

According to the debt bulletin data, the debt linked to the Central Bank of West African States (BCEAO) and the International Monetary Fund (IMF) is recorded as domestic debt. Its contributions amounted to 369.21 billion FCFA in the second quarter of 2025.

If international partners were to withdraw funding, “there will likely be shortfalls in wage payments, including those of civil servants,” said Beverly Ochieng, senior analyst at Control Risks, a specialist global risk consultancy. “Social services, particularly education and medicines, are likely to be restricted.”

Ochieng also said it could lead to the introduction of new taxes to cover the shortfalls resulting from any such withdrawal or reduction of foreign aid to Burkina Faso.

Major projects rely on development finance

The Burkinabe government’s data also offers some insights into official development assistance (ODA) received between 2021 and 2024. While bilateral aid has declined, multilateral aid has increased.

Bilateral aid fell from $699.65 million in 2021 to $269.21 million in 2024, a drop of 48.4%, attributed to the departure or suspension of disbursements by some partners, including France. However, this was offset by other sources. Multilateral aid reached its highest level since 2015, when it rose to $1.518 billion in 2024. Contributions from international NGOs have almost doubled, rising from $86.57 million to $157.58 million between 2021 and 2024.

The names of donors are familiar. The World Bank remains Burkina Faso’s largest multilateral contributor, with $632.85 million in 2024, up from $586.3 million in 2023. The United Nations comes in second with $543 million.

These institutions did not simply finance abstract budget lines. Four major projects launched between 2024 and 2026 illustrate the concrete nature of the cooperation in strategic sectors of the country. For the Water Security Project, 91.2 billion FCFA out of 92 billion is financed by the World Bank. There is also the Urban Mobility and Development Project (with 118.93 billion out of 124.8 billion externally funded), the ECOTEC Entrepreneurship Support Project (with 98.98 billion out of 106 billion externally funded), and an economic infrastructure rehabilitation project financed by the Islamic Development Bank. These four projects alone represent more than 440 billion FCFA, almost entirely financed by foreign partners.

The total amount of published ODA is $1.94 billion for 2024, but it could be higher, as data relating to contributions from the Global Fund and the United States were not available when the document was provided.

The situation is compounded by increasing budgetary pressure as debt servicing reached 1.17 trillion FCFA in 2024.

Humanitarian needs hinge on foreign support

The spiral of insecurity that has plagued the country for many years has inevitably increased reliance on external partners to address the challenges. In 2025, according to the UN Resident Coordinator in Burkina Faso, 155 partners mobilised $271.3 million to assist 1.7 million people. For 2026, humanitarian needs are estimated at 735 billion CFA francs, nearly half (364.68 billion) of which is covered by external partners.

Source: Statistical Yearbook of the Burkinabè Ministry in charge of finance

Furthermore, in February 2026, Burkina Faso and the United Nations concluded a partnership amounting to 850.2 billion FCFA, of which 645.7 billion was earmarked for agriculture and water.

Data compiled from official Burkinabe sources is clear: international financial flows to Burkina Faso have not stopped. But its leaders continue to trumpet a sovereignty rhetoric that mocks foreign financial assistance in Africa as a whole.

“The historical cooperation between Burkina Faso and other Western donors is the cornerstone of humanitarian aid,” said Ochieng. “And as long as current partners maintain pragmatic and non-confrontational relations with the military government, this active cooperation will remain in place.”

Internal fund mobilisation continues

Authorities in Burkina Faso continue to mobilise more local finance, even if current outcomes have been insufficient to meet the country’s financial obligations and its quest for sovereignty.

Extraction of resources such as gold has been ramped up. According to the Prime Minister in a speech to the National Assembly on January 30, 2026, the country produced a total of 94 tonnes of gold in 2025. In previous years, total production stood at 60.8 tonnes in 2024 and 57.3 tonnes in 2023. In 2021 and 2022, production was 67.1 tonnes and 58.2 tonnes, respectively, according to the Ministry of Mines.

Then there was the Patriotic Support Fund, financed by voluntary contributions, taxes on consumer goods, electronic communications, imported products, and mandatory deductions from salaries, the mining development fund, and other sources.

Between 2023 and the end of 2025, this fund mobilised nearly 500 billion FCFA, exceeding the initial target of 450 billion. “This means that we have internal capabilities that were not sufficiently exploited,” said Finance Minister Aboubacar Nacanabo in February 2026. But this fund is primarily intended for the support of the Volunteers for the Defense of the Homeland (VDP) and the acquisition of military equipment.

According to Ochieng, Burkina Faso is pursuing its goal of financial autonomy in various ways. “For example, in the mining sector, where the majority of operators are foreign, the country has adopted a policy that facilitates increased participation by local entities, and has allowed local banks to finance the expansion of mining activities,” she said.

For now, though, the country continues to rely on loans and support from international organisations to meet its obligations at home, even though this was not what the current military rulers promised when they said it was time to stop begging for help.

🇧🇫 Discours du président Ibrahim Traoré au 2e sommet Russie -Afrique. nonadult
Russia in Niger, between promises and murky dealings https://www.adomonline.com/russia-in-niger-between-promises-and-murky-dealings/ Tue, 14 Apr 2026 18:45:05 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2651383 It is still early. The surroundings of Niamey’s Diori Hamani International Airport are bathed in the pale light of a West African dawn. Yet just a few days prior, this very stretch of tarmac was the scene of an armed attack that sent shockwaves through the capital’s population. On the night of 28 to 29 January 2026, a commando of more than thirty motorcycle-borne assailants, using drones and mortars, launched an assault on Air Base 101 located within the airport grounds. The attack was claimed by the Islamic State. Civilian aircraft were hit, a munitions stockpile caught fire, and four Nigerien soldiers were wounded. The operation reopened, with particular brutality, a wound some had believed was beginning to heal.

Despite the presence of Russian instructors since April 2024, is Niger truly safer than before?

Ever since the men of Africa Corps set foot on Nigerien soil, the junta led by General Abdourahamane Tiani has been lavish in its praise of this new alliance. In official statements, Moscow is now presented as the providential partner, the one stepping in where the West has failed, the one that would honour the country’s sovereignty without humiliating conditions. For example, following the airport attack, General Tiani praised the bravery of the Russian partners, who he said, alongside the Nigerien military, “routed the enemy in the space of twenty minutes”.

And yet, on the ground, armed groups continue to strike. And yet, the contracts remain classified. And yet, no one truly knows what these instructors are doing, or how many of them there are.

The turning point of summer 2023

Everything shifts in July 2023, when the National Council for the Safeguard of the Homeland overthrows Mohamed Bazoum. The coup does not merely trigger a political crisis, it sets off a sweeping diplomatic avalanche. French soldiers pack their bags and leave. The Americans, for their part, abandon their prized drone base in Agadez, where more than 1,000 American soldiers were deployed at the time of the coup. In March 2024, Niger denounces “with immediate effect” the military cooperation agreement with Washington, deeming it had been “unilaterally imposed”.

Within months, Niger finds itself alone, confronting its own demons: the Islamic State in the Greater Sahara pressing from the west, Boko Haram threatening from the southeast, and a state whose security foundations have just been shaken from within.

It is into this vacuum that Russia moves. On 10 April 2024, the first Africa Corps instructors land in Niamey aboard an Ilyushin-76, with military equipment on board. The outfit, partly heir to the Wagner Group’s methods and doctrine, arrives with a three-part pitch: train Nigerien soldiers, strengthen aerial defence, and improve intelligence capabilities. The programme sounds ambitious. The reality proves far more complicated.

Training soldiers, but which ones?

At Niamey’s Air Base 101, training sessions have indeed taken place: drone operation, aerial surveillance, asymmetric warfare tactics, skills the Nigerien armed forces desperately need. Russian technicians are also said to have brought back into service equipment previously acquired but left idle for lack of maintenance.

But therein lies the problem. Of the 100 military instructors deployed in April 2024, military sources cite a gradual return of the majority to operational zones in Ukraine, leaving only around twenty men on the ground, according to the site ActuNiger, Above all, these training programmes remained concentrated in the capital. In the areas where danger is most immediate, the Tillaberi region, the remote stretches of Diffa, Nigerien soldiers still face the same ambushes, with no measurable shift in the dynamics on the ground. According to ACLED, some 1,500 civilians and soldiers died in jihadist attacks from the coup until August 2024, compared to 650 in the year preceding the coup. In 2024, Niger recorded the highest global increase in terrorism-related deaths, with 930 fatalities, a rise of 94%, according to the Global Terrorism Index 2025. Training a handful of battalions in Niamey is simply not enough to alter the face of a war being fought hundreds of kilometres away.

It is precisely this gap between official announcements and field realities that exasperates Moussa Mahamadou, a teacher based in Niamey who has been closely following the security situation for several years. “They talk to us about training, cooperation, and strategic partnership. But I want to see concrete results. Are the people of Tillaberi and Tahoua sleeping better at night? Can the farmers of Diffa go out and tend their fields without fear of being attacked? The answer is no. This cooperation, for now, is nothing but a smokescreen, a political façade that does absolutely nothing to change the daily reality of Nigeriens living under the threat of violence.”

A shield for the capital, an illusion for the rest

On the matter of aerial defence, the Russians have delivered concrete results. In less than a month after the arrival of the first instructors, Russia chartered three cargo flights to deliver military equipment to Niamey, radar systems, an anti-aircraft defence platform, and surveillance equipment. The capital is better protected than it once was, according to official narratives.

But that shield stops at the city’s gates. In the border regions, populations have been living in fear for years. According to FEWS NET (October 2025), the Tillaberi region accounts for nearly 60% of the country’s total security incidents, where attacks by the Islamic State in the Sahel and JNIM are most intense and frequent in the far north-west. The Dosso region recorded a 195% increase in security incidents and nearly 600% more deaths in 2025 compared to the previous year. And even Niamey itself is not impregnable. The attack on the airport on 29 January 2026, claimed by the Islamic State, served as a painful and unambiguous reminder: two ASKY civilian aircraft damaged, a munitions stockpile in flames, and satellite imagery showing partially burned areas near the runway.

This geography of protection, everything for the capital, nothing for the periphery, has not gone unnoticed by Adamou Issoufou, an independent analyst specialising in governance and natural resources. In his view, the concentration of security assets around Niamey is no accident whatsoever. “Look at where this equipment is being deployed. Around the capital, around sensitive infrastructure, around strategic corridors. Not in the villages of Tillaberi. Not in Diffa. Why? Because the real objective is to protect the regime and secure access to the country’s mineral wealth. Niger sits atop uranium, oil, and gold.

The Russians did not come here out of idealism. They came to secure a seat at the table. And the junta, in return, gets the guarantee of remaining in power. Ordinary citizens, meanwhile, are nothing more than spectators to this arrangement.”

Intelligence: when promises meet the reality of the Sahel

The third pillar of the partnership, intelligence sharing, is perhaps the most revealing illustration of its underlying fragilities. The episode did not go unnoticed among specialists. In May 2025, the National Council for the Safeguard of the Homeland (CNSP) abruptly terminated technical intelligence cooperation agreements with Russia and Turkey. According to security sources cited by the Zagazola portal, the General Directorate of Documentation and External Security (DGDSE) assessed that “the equipment and operators deployed by both countries did not meet operational standards”, particularly in the domain of telephone interception. This decision forced Niamey to urgently turn to a Moroccan company specialising in communications interception.

The CNSP shocked its Russian partners by cutting short the intelligence cooperation, but promptly signed in 2025, with Mali and Burkina Faso, a regional agreement to use Roscosmos satellite services, Russian high technology for imagery and geolocation, but without Russian agents on the ground.

Alkassoum Tahirou, a merchant long established in Niamey, has a far more direct way of capturing what he feels. His words, delivered with a quiet and settled bitterness, carry the weight of popular wisdom. “Where we come from, we say that one hare has left and another has arrived. France left, Russia came. But both hares are utterly useless to us, the ordinary citizens. Neither one truly cares about our security, our peace, or our social cohesion. These are arrangements made between the powerful. The farmer from my village who can no longer go to market for fear of being attacked, nobody is interested in him. Not Paris, not Moscow, not even Niamey.”

The ghosts of the contract

What does all of this actually cost? No one truly knows. No contract has been made public. No official figures have been released regarding the cost of the equipment delivered or the remuneration of the instructors. And how many of them are there, for that matter? Between 60 and 100 men, according to diplomatic sources, up to 350 according to other estimates. The junta says nothing.

This silence carries a measurable economic cost. According to Africa Defense Forum, the junta has been forced to cut its budget by 40% since the coup, and has accumulated $519 million in arrears on its international debt. The World Bank estimates that Niger’s economic growth in 2024 was 45% lower than it was before the putsch. It is in this context of financial distress that the junta sought, according to analyst Liam Karr of the Institute for the Study of War, “to barter Niger’s natural resources for loans and weapons.”

The most tangible illustration of this opaque barter is the uranium affair. In 2024, the junta revoked the operating licences of Orano, the French company 90% controlled by the state, bringing to an end more than fifty years of nuclear cooperation. By late 2025, according to Le Monde and several French government sources, an agreement valued at an estimated $170 million was reportedly negotiated with Rosatom, the Russian nuclear giant, for the transfer of approximately 1,000 tonnes of uranium yellowcake stockpiled at the Arlit mine.

Niger is the world’s seventh-largest uranium producer. In December 2025, Niger officially signed a memorandum of understanding with Rosatom for the development of new mining sites. This is the probable quid pro quo for a security cooperation whose terms remain unknown.

This silence is far from inconsequential. Specialists in these kinds of security partnerships know all too well that agreements with outfits such as Africa Corps frequently contain deeply uncomfortable clauses, namely legal immunity for foreign personnel, access to natural resources, and discreet economic arrangements operating well below the public radar. In a country where Parliament has been suspended and replaced by a Consultative Council that neither legislates nor holds the executive to account, there is simply no one left to ask the questions that urgently need answering.

The battle of narratives

The Russian-Nigerien cooperation is also being fought in the realm of perception and public opinion. On social media, images of Russian cargo planes touching down in Niamey, or of demonstrators waving flags bearing the red star, are multiplying at a striking pace. Media outlets aligned with Moscow hail each equipment delivery as a historic milestone. The communication machine is well-oiled, effective, and omnipresent.

On the other side, international media outlets continue to highlight the grey areas, the ongoing attacks, and the questions that remain unanswered. The result is a public debate torn in two, where hard facts struggle to find their way through the noise of competing narratives.

It is against this polarised backdrop that a more measured voice deserves to be heard. Hama Danda, a retired civil servant and an attentive reader of the national press, firmly refuses to succumb to the prevailing pessimism.

Seated in the courtyard of his home, he chooses his words deliberately. “People are far too impatient. A security cooperation of this scale cannot be built in a single year, or even two. It takes time to train men properly, to master the equipment, for results to become visible on the ground. I listened carefully to the head of state when he spoke. In his major interview, General Tiani was unambiguous that this cooperation is mutually beneficial, conducted in full respect of Niger’s sovereignty and its political choices. These are not empty words. Our authorities do not lie to the people. We must trust them and allow time to do its work. The results will come.”

An alliance to stabilise the country, or to consolidate power?

Some analysts are raising a question that few dare voice openly: what if this cooperation were serving, first and foremost, domestic political interests? Strengthening the defence of Niamey and its strategic infrastructure also means tightening the regime’s grip on the country. In a context where the junta’s legitimacy remains contested on the international stage, securing control of the airspace above the capital is anything but a trivial detail.

Internal Russian government documents consulted by the BBC reveal that Moscow’s partnerships with African juntas rest on a well-tested model: the security of administrative centres and incumbent regimes, in exchange for mining concessions. This pattern, first tested in Sudan as early as 2017, where Wagner secured gold mining concessions in exchange for training the security forces of the Bashir regime – was then refined in the Central African Republic from 2018 onwards, with control over diamond mines granted in exchange for the personal protection of President Touadéra.

The model was subsequently systematised across the Sahel following successive coups. In Mali, the junta invited Wagner in 2021, culminating in 2023 in the signing of an agreement to build the country’s largest gold refinery. In Burkina Faso, Captain Traoré reportedly ceded a mine directly as payment for the deployment of Russian forces. Niger, sitting atop strategic reserves of uranium, oil, and gold, follows the same logic: the revocation of Orano’s licences and the negotiations initiated with Rosatom in 2025 do not represent a rupture, but rather the faithful reproduction of a model that Moscow has patiently refined from one end of the continent to the other.

An unanswered equation, a people left without certainty

The four voices gathered in the course of this investigation paint the portrait of a society divided in the face of an alliance it does not fully comprehend. Between the scepticism of Moussa Mahamadou, who is waiting for tangible proof on the ground; the distrust of Adamou Issoufou, convinced that the country’s natural resources lie at the very heart of the deal; the disillusionment of Alkassoum Tahirou, who sees in the great powers nothing but actors indifferent to ordinary suffering; and the measured patience of Hama Danda, who places his trust in time and in the authorities: the national sentiment is, at its core, profoundly divided.

Three years on from the coup, the fundamental questions remain entirely unanswered. Have the Russian instructors genuinely altered the balance of power against the armed groups? Or does their presence amount to little more than a geopolitical symbol, with limited operational impact on the ground? And at what price, human, financial, and institutional, has Niger purchased this new form of security?

The only available elements point to a mixed assessment: a capital better protected, yet exposed to the first jihadist attack in its history; forces trained in Niamey, but the countryside of Tillaberi and Diffa still drenched in blood; intelligence systems deemed ill-suited, rejected and replaced in haste; and contracts that have never been made public.

In this war of many faces, military, diplomatic, and informational, sweeping announcements rarely precede decisive victories. Niger has chosen its side. What remains to be seen is whether that choice will succeed in bringing peace back to the villages of Tillaberi, Tahoua, and Diffa, or whether it will merely shift the fault lines in a Sahel that shows no signs of settling.

Fuel relief must go beyond short-term cuts – Prof. Peprah to gov’t https://www.adomonline.com/fuel-relief-must-go-beyond-short-term-cuts-prof-peprah-to-govt/ Tue, 14 Apr 2026 15:39:03 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2651338 Professor of Finance at Andrews University, Prof. William Peprah, has urged the government to move beyond short-term fuel price interventions, insisting that a more structured medium-term approach is needed to ensure both economic stability and effective planning.

His comment follows the government’s directive to suspend fuel taxes for 4 weeks, subject to review based on global oil prices amid rising tensions in the Middle East.

Speaking in an interview on JoyNews’ The Pulse on Tuesday, April 14, Prof. Peprah said frequent or short-lived fuel relief measures are not sustainable and could undermine effective fiscal management.

He argued that government must integrate fuel pricing decisions into a broader economic framework, including budget adjustments and expenditure reviews.

According to him, fuel price interventions should be linked to a medium-term policy response of about three to six months, rather than weekly or monthly adjustments.

“The short-term proposal for four weeks is not feasible. The world is not going to end now,” he said, adding that global shocks, including conflicts and supply disruptions, often take months to stabilise.

Prof. Peprah further noted that even minor global disruptions can have prolonged effects on economies, stressing the need for a stable and predictable policy direction.

Meanwhile, IMANI Africa, COPEC Ghana, and the Institute for Energy Security have called for a GH¢1.65 reduction per litre in fuel prices.

Prof. Peprah, however, maintained that any fuel relief must be accompanied by a broader fiscal adjustment plan, including a review of government expenditure to align spending with reduced revenue.

He cautioned that without such coordination, short-term tax cuts could widen the fiscal deficit and disrupt the 2026 budget targets.

“We must align our expected revenues with expenditure so that the 2026 targets can still be achieved,” he emphasised.

Ghana launches first Marine Protected Area to safeguard coastal ecosystems https://www.adomonline.com/ghana-launches-first-marine-protected-area-to-safeguard-coastal-ecosystems/ Tue, 14 Apr 2026 14:24:00 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2651299 The government has launched Ghana’s first-ever Marine Protected Area (MPA), the Cape Three Points Marine Protected Area, covering approximately 700 square kilometres.

The announcement was made by the Minister for Lands and Natural Resources and Acting Minister for Environment, Science and Technology, Emmanuel Armah-Kofi Buah, who described the initiative as a major step toward protecting the country’s marine resources.

He warned that Ghana’s coastal and marine ecosystems are under increasing threat from overfishing, pollution, habitat destruction, illegal mining, and climate change. He cited the degradation of key areas such as the Keta Lagoon, Ada, Sakumono, Densu Delta, and Muni Pomadze as evidence of the growing environmental challenges.

According to the Minister, the new protected area is aimed not only at conservation but also at securing livelihoods, strengthening resilience, and empowering coastal communities.

The initiative builds on the West Africa Coastal Areas (WACA) Programme, which has already supported thousands of households in reducing the impact of coastal erosion and flooding.

Mr. Buah called for strong collaboration among government agencies, researchers, civil society, and development partners to ensure the project’s success, adding that it should serve as a model for sustainable marine conservation.

He reaffirmed the government’s commitment to protecting Ghana’s oceans while promoting a balance between environmental sustainability and economic development.

Frimpong, a 20-year-old striker on loan to Berekum Chelsea, tragically died following an armed robbery attack on the team’s bus.

The incident occurred on Sunday, April 12, along the Bibiani–Goaso road as the team returned from a Ghana Premier League fixture against FC Samartex 1996 in Samreboi.

During the visit to the family home at Assin Dansame, Mr. Atta Poku formally handed over the late player’s bag as a symbol of the club’s final tribute.

Several players and officials sustained injuries during the attack. Frimpong, who suffered gunshot wounds, was rushed to hospital but was later pronounced dead. The young forward had been enjoying regular game time this season with Berekum Chelsea.

Speaking to Adom News through affiliate reporter Fadda Romeo, Mr. Atta Poku said: “This truly confirms that indeed our player is no more. It is a very painful moment for all of us.”

Assistant coach of Berekum Chelsea, Obed Owusu, who helped communicate the tragic news to the family, added: “We came to inform the family about what happened and to stand with them in this difficult time. It is a loss we are all struggling to accept.”

The family head, Nana Gyan Agyabeng I, described their shock upon receiving the news, saying: “We received the news with great shock. It is heartbreaking to lose such a young and promising life under these circumstances.”

The tragedy has drawn widespread condolences from the global football community. Gianni Infantino described the incident as tragic, while Patrice Motsepe also expressed deep sorrow, noting that the African football family stands with Ghana during this difficult time.

The Ghana Football Association also paid tribute, describing Frimpong as a promising talent whose untimely death is a huge loss to Ghana football.

The incident has renewed concerns about security for sports teams travelling across Ghana’s road network.

He expressed optimism that government will move to reduce certain fuel-related taxes, a decision expected to bring some relief to the transport sector.

Mr. Osei also addressed concerns about a possible ban on Toyota Voxy vehicles for commercial use, stating that the Association has engaged the Transport Minister, Joseph Nikpe Bukari, who assured them that no such directive has been issued.

He added that the Minister has not received any official report supporting claims of a ban on Voxy vehicles.

GAYO joins forces with KMA to tackle the waste crisis in Kumasi https://www.adomonline.com/gayo-joins-forces-with-kma-to-tackle-the-waste-crisis-in-kumasi/ Tue, 14 Apr 2026 11:35:00 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2651213 The Ashanti regional capital, Kumasi, is currently struggling with a growing waste management challenge.

The Oti Landfill site is nearing its full capacity, which has since thrown the city into an unhygienic scene with filth engulfing major market centres and communities.

The city’s streets are cluttered, some drains are clogged, and the environment is struggling under the weight of unmanaged waste.

As part of broader efforts to tackle the issue head-on, the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly has teamed up with the Green Africa Youth Organization (GAYO) on a citywide comprehensive cleanup campaign in identified hotspot areas within the metropolis.

The exercise, aimed at raising awareness and driving action towards a cleaner environment, kicked off at the Airport roundabout and ended at Manhyia Place, bringing together student volunteers, market traders, residents, informal waste collectors, and officials from the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA).

Ashanti Regional Coordinator for Green Africa Youth Organization (GAYO), Sampson Osei Tutu Aggrey, said it is the organization’s aim to support the Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Assemblies (MMDAs) in managing waste, enabling the government to achieve its goal of implementing National Sanitation Day.

According to him, the community cleanup exercise and public sensitization campaigns on waste segregation and recycling are part of the GAYO’s flagship programme, the Kumasi Circular Action Project, under its Zero Waste portfolio.

He highlighted the importance of educating the public about proper waste management practices and circular economy principles.

He also explained that sorting waste has a positive impact on waste management, as it redirects materials that can be recycled or composted away from landfills.

Mr. Aggrey stated that solid waste can be transformed into valuable products and that adopting proper waste management practices can generate income for Ghanaians.

“It’s time for people in the country to realize that their waste, particularly solid waste, can be a source of income. Therefore, they should refrain from disposing of it carelessly.”

He mentioned that GAYO is setting up Material Recovery Facility to function as waste banks, where waste products that have been segregated will be collected.

“We have a project called Zero Waste. Under this project, we are collaborating with MMDAs to set up Material Recovery Facilities. These facilities will collect solid waste from individuals and provide payment for it. The waste will then be converted into valuable products”

The Mayor of Kumasi, Richard Ofori Agyemang Boadi, sheds light on the significant amount of resources that the Metro is allocating to waste management on a daily basis.

He stated that “Kumasi generates over 2,000 metric tons of waste daily, while other municipalities and districts which dispose of their waste at KMA’s Oti Landfill for management also contribute about 8,000 metric tons. As a result, KMA manages a total of 10,000 metric tons daily, at a cost of ₵83 per ton”.

He expressed concern that substantial funds are being allocated to waste management, whereas these resources could be invested in development projects.

The Mayor of Kumasi emphasized the need for collective action to maintain a clean and healthy environment in the city.

He appealed to residents to be more conscious of the harmful effects of indiscriminate littering and to support efforts to prevent it.

Ghana’s economic turnaround gains Global spotlight at IMF/World Bank Spring Meetings https://www.adomonline.com/ghanas-economic-turnaround-gains-global-spotlight-at-imf-world-bank-spring-meetings/ Tue, 14 Apr 2026 10:52:06 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2651196 Ghana’s economic recovery story has taken centre stage at the ongoing IMF/World Bank Spring Meetings, as Finance Minister Cassiel Ato Forson presented the country’s turnaround experience at the 13th African Fiscal Forum’s High-Level Roundtable.

Addressing a session on “Macro-Fiscal Developments and Outlook in Sub-Saharan Africa,” Dr. Forson said Ghana’s experience over the past fifteen months demonstrates that African economies can not only navigate crises but also turn them into opportunities for deep structural reform.

He recalled that Ghana faced severe economic challenges in 2022/2023, but noted that a combination of policy measures and sustained reforms since 2025 has helped restore macroeconomic stability and strengthen the fundamentals of the economy.

Providing evidence of the recovery, the Finance Minister highlighted improvements across key macroeconomic indicators. Real GDP growth rose to 6% in 2025, up from 5.8% in 2024, while inflation declined sharply from 23.8% in 2024 to 5.8% in 2025, falling further to 3.2% as of March 2026.

He also pointed to stabilisation of the local currency, with the cedi appreciating by more than 40% against the US dollar in 2025, with gains continuing into 2026.

On the fiscal front, Dr. Forson noted that Ghana’s primary balance, measured on a commitment basis and serving as the fiscal anchor, improved from a deficit of 2.9% of GDP to a surplus of 2.6% of GDP in 2025. Public debt levels also declined, with the debt-to-GDP ratio falling from 61.8% to 45.3% at the end of 2025, well ahead of the initial 2034 target.

In addition, international reserves have strengthened, now covering 5.8 months of imports, while policy credibility has been reinforced through stronger institutions and the adoption of clearer fiscal rules.

Dr. Forson emphasised that the gains reflect disciplined fiscal management and a deliberate strategy to anchor economic policy in credible institutions, ensuring sustainability over the medium term.

The IMF/World Bank Spring Meetings continue in Washington, D.C., bringing together finance ministers, central bank governors, and global economic leaders to assess the global economic outlook and policy priorities for sustained growth.

The absence of a proper health facility and essential equipment in the area is hindering residents from accessing timely healthcare. This situation has compelled the Assemblyman and traditional leaders to rent a private house, which now serves as a temporary CHPS compound to provide basic healthcare services for the community.

In an interview with the chiefs of the two communities, Nambro and Bahyirenwere, Nana Kofi Nuako V and Nana Kwadwo Ngoah II, they revealed that residents often have to travel long distances to access healthcare services.

According to them, the elderly and pregnant women endure severe hardship before reaching health facilities. This challenge prompted the authorities to establish the temporary CHPS compound.

On his part, the Assemblyman for the area, Frank Addae, appealed to government to equip the newly established facility with adequate equipment, drugs, and other logistics to ensure effective service delivery, while the community awaits a permanent CHPS compound.

Silent killers surge with NCDs now behind nearly half of deaths in Ghana – Health Minister https://www.adomonline.com/silent-killers-surge-with-ncds-now-behind-nearly-half-of-deaths-in-ghana-health-minister/ Tue, 14 Apr 2026 08:59:20 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2651151 Ghana is facing a growing public health crisis, with non-communicable diseases (NCDs) now accounting for nearly half of all deaths, according to the Minister of Health, Kwabena Mintah-Akandoh.

Speaking on PM Express on Joy News Monday, the Minister warned that the country must urgently shift focus to early detection and prevention to curb the rising toll of these “silent killers.”

“The NCDs are rising at an alarming rate in this country. About 42 to 45% of our mortalities are attributable to non-communicable diseases,” he said.

The Minister’s comments come at a time when Ghana’s health system is grappling with a dual burden of infectious diseases and a sharp increase in chronic conditions such as hypertension, diabetes, and cardiovascular diseases.

To address the situation, the government is rolling out a renewed focus on free primary healthcare to improve access and encourage early diagnosis.

“You can do the driver’s license, Ghana card, passport, and national health insurance card. Any of these that will identify you as a Ghanaian will give you access to the primary health care,” he explained.

He stressed that beyond cost, the real transformation will come from taking healthcare directly to communities.https://www.youtube.com/embed/cHED7SvJOt4?si=DQsQNvtHLB_SeYzi

“So apart from the fact that it is going to be free at that point, what for me is going to be the game changer is the fact that we are going to move into the homes of Ghanaians to do simple screening,” he said.

According to him, the key to reversing the trend lies in identifying diseases early before they progress into severe complications.

“But we must begin to trace the source. We must begin to be able to detect these conditions on time to prevent them from getting to the complications,” he noted.

The strategy is part of a broader health reform agenda aimed at strengthening prevention, early detection, and treatment.

“Now we have Mahama Cares, so these reforms must be comprehensive. It must be complete. So we go back to free primary health care. They will help us to detect the disease on time, to prevent it if possible,” he added.

He acknowledged that not all cases can be prevented or detected early, but said the government has plans in place to manage advanced conditions.

“But if, unfortunately, we are unable to prevent them or to detect them on time, and it gets to a complicated stage, there’s another policy called Mahama Cares to be able to save you,” he said.

Speaking on Ekosii Sen, the Minister said President John Dramani Mahama has assured that none of the projects will be abandoned despite current challenges.

According to him, the options under consideration include direct government funding for the completion of some hospitals, partnerships with corporate and religious bodies to support non-profit completion of others, and private sector participation under public-private partnership arrangements.

Mr. Akandoh explained that the measures are aimed at accelerating progress and ensuring that most of the facilities are completed as planned.

He added that he has engaged some contractors and encouraged those who have left site to return to work, noting that he will soon embark on inspections to assess progress.

The Minister further indicated that provisions in the 2026 budget will be used to support the completion of the projects and improve healthcare delivery across the country.

“President Mahama has assured us that no project will be abandoned. I have met some contractors and encouraged those who are not currently on site to return. Soon, I will be inspecting the progress,” he said.

NRSA warns public against use of converted Toyota Voxy vehicles https://www.adomonline.com/nrsa-warns-public-against-use-of-converted-toyota-voxy-vehicles/ Mon, 13 Apr 2026 18:53:18 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2650943 The National Road Safety Authority (NRSA) has cautioned the public against the use of converted Toyota Voxy vehicles, citing serious safety risks.

In a public advisory issued on April 13, 2026, the Authority revealed that a Technical Working Group found the vehicles—originally manufactured as right-hand drive—are being converted to left-hand drive without approved standards or regulatory oversight.

According to the NRSA, these conversions involve major structural changes to critical systems such as steering, braking, and suspension, potentially compromising safety and increasing the risk of mechanical failure.

The Authority further noted that the Toyota Voxy is designed as a family minivan and is not suitable for commercial passenger transport, particularly for long-distance travel. It also raised concerns that some privately registered vehicles are being used for commercial purposes in violation of regulations.

The NRSA has therefore advised passengers to avoid patronising such vehicles, especially for long journeys, and urged operators to comply strictly with safety requirements.

Importers have also been cautioned against bringing in right-hand drive vehicles intended for conversion.

The Authority says it is working with key stakeholders, including the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority, Ghana Standards Authority, and the Ghana Police Service, to implement measures aimed at improving road safety and protecting the travelling public.

Speaking on Asempa FM’s Ekosii Sen show, he said that although challenges remain, steps are being taken to enhance the welfare of health professionals across the country.

Mr. Akandoh noted that under the Free Primary Health Care initiative, recruitment will not be forced, as nurses and other health workers will be allowed to select their preferred districts through an open portal before undergoing interviews.

He acknowledged the need to better motivate health workers, adding that engagements have been held with District Chief Executives to provide suitable accommodation for staff.

“We will not assign a nurse to you. Instead, we will open a portal for you to select a healthcare provider and attend an interview for free primary healthcare. Once the portal is open and the time limit is reached, it will be closed. You will also have the opportunity to choose the district you’re interested in. Participation is voluntary; we will not force anyone to take part.

“I acknowledge that we need to implement measures to motivate our healthcare workers. I have already spoken with some District Chief Executives (DCEs) and others about providing suitable accommodations for our health workers. The government is committed to improving conditions for medical doctors, and we will make the best of our current resources. Plans are in progress to enhance the overall well-being of all healthcare workers,” he stated.

The Minister reiterated that government has undertaken extensive stakeholder consultations and has earmarked about GH¢1.2 billion for the implementation of the policy, which is already captured under the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) formula before Parliament.

He added that the programme will include a range of screening services aimed at improving early detection and overall health outcomes.

Health Minister clarifies free primary healthcare scope https://www.adomonline.com/health-minister-clarifies-free-primary-healthcare-scope/ Mon, 13 Apr 2026 16:07:29 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2650836 The Minister for Health, Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, has clarified that teaching hospitals and regional hospitals will not be included in the government’s Free Primary Health Care initiative.

Speaking on Asempa FM’s Ekosii Sen show, he explained that the policy will focus on Community-based Health Planning and Services (CHPS) compounds, health centres, and polyclinics across the country.

According to him, the initiative is part of efforts to reset Ghana’s healthcare system towards prevention, health promotion, and equity rather than treatment.

“This initiative represents a significant reset of our health system, aiming to prioritise prevention, promotion, and equity. While free healthcare and the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) are essential, there are still limitations. The programme will be implemented in Community-Based Health Planning and Services (CHPS) compounds, health centres, and polyclinics. We are transitioning from a focus on sick care to a more proactive healthcare system to achieve universal health coverage,” he said.

Mr. Akandoh noted that the programme will be rolled out in 150 districts in its first year, targeting underserved communities, with a long-term goal of achieving nationwide coverage by 2028.

He added that the initiative, which will cost about GH₵1.2 billion annually, is designed to promote early detection of diseases, particularly non-communicable conditions, while reducing the financial burden on citizens.

The Minister further indicated that the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) will play a key role in supporting the programme, which includes a range of screening services to improve access to essential healthcare.

“We are starting this initiative on a small scale. Out of the 261 districts, we have selected 150 districts across the 16 regions for the first year. The Ghana Health Service (GHS) has defined underserved communities, and we will begin our efforts there. Our ultimate goal is to ensure that by the end of 2028, the entire country will be covered under this programme,” he said.

Health Minister unveils nationwide preventive care expansion plan https://www.adomonline.com/health-minister-unveils-nationwide-preventive-care-expansion-plan/ Mon, 13 Apr 2026 16:05:28 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2650834 The Minister for Health, Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, has announced a major shift in Ghana’s healthcare delivery system, with renewed focus on prevention rather than treatment.

Speaking on Asempa FM’s Ekosii Sen show, he said the government aims to move from “sick care” to true healthcare by encouraging regular medical check-ups for early detection of diseases.

The initiative forms part of a new Free Primary Health Care policy, under which government will absorb the cost of basic healthcare services to reduce financial barriers and expand access.

“Steps are underway to help us reach this goal through CHPS compounds, the NHIS, Mahama Cares, and other initiatives. Non-communicable diseases are a major concern in our country, and many people are unaware that they have these illnesses. Therefore, the introduction of free primary healthcare is aimed at facilitating early detection and reducing the financial burden on families,” he said.

Mr. Akandoh explained that the programme will initially be rolled out in 150 districts across all 16 regions, targeting underserved communities, with plans to achieve nationwide coverage by 2028.

He noted that non-communicable diseases remain a major concern, as many people are unaware of underlying health conditions, making early screening critical.

The Minister added that the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) will support the initiative, which is expected to cost about GH¢1.2 billion and include a range of screening services aimed at improving early diagnosis and overall health outcomes.

NPP condemns arrest of ‘Baba Amando’, raises free speech concerns https://www.adomonline.com/npp-condemns-arrest-of-baba-amando-raises-free-speech-concerns/ Mon, 13 Apr 2026 15:09:45 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2650817 The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has condemned the arrest of its Sunyani East Constituency Communications Officer, Abubakar Yakubu, popularly known as Baba Amando, describing the move as troubling and a threat to democratic freedoms.

In a statement issued on April 13, the party said Mr. Yakubu, accompanied by his lawyer Alfred Tuah Yeboah, honoured a police invitation at the Bono Regional Police Headquarters, only to be informed that officers there had no knowledge of the invitation.

According to the NPP, further checks with the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) Headquarters in Accra revealed that he was rather required in the capital, leading to his arrest and subsequent transfer to Accra.

The party expressed concern over what it described as the increasing use of state security agencies to intimidate dissenting voices under the current administration.

It also argued that the incident raises serious questions about free speech and civil liberties in the country, while alleging that it could be a diversion from key national issues, including the cost of living and governance challenges.

The NPP has therefore called on authorities to uphold due process, respect the rule of law, and protect the fundamental rights of all citizens.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

April 13, 2026

NPP CONDEMNS ARREST OF BABA AMANDO; RAISES CONCERNS OVER FREE SPEECH & ABUSE OF STATE POWER

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) strongly condemns the arrest of Mr. Abubakar Yakubu, the Sunyani East Constituency Communications Officer, popularly known as Baba Amando, describing the action as unwarranted and deeply troubling for Ghana’s democratic credentials.

According to available information, Mr. Yakubu, accompanied by his lawyer, Mr. Alfred Tuah Yeboah, a former Deputy Attorney-General, honoured an invitation from the Ghana Police Service at the Bono Regional Police Headquarters at approximately 10:00 a.m. today. Upon arrival, however, both Mr. Yakubu and his counsel were informed by officers at the command that they had no knowledge of such an invitation, despite prior communication directing him to report there.

Subsequent engagement with the Police Criminal Investigations Department (CID) Headquarters in Accra revealed that Mr. Yakubu was instead required in Accra. The CID in Accra reportedly instructed the Bono Regional Police CID to effect his arrest and facilitate his transfer to the capital. He has since been arrested and is currently being conveyed to Accra.

The NPP views this development as yet another example of the growing use of state security apparatus to intimidate and silence dissenting voices under the administration of President John Mahama. The Party is particularly concerned that this action raises serious questions about the state of free speech and civil liberties in the country.

Furthermore, the Party believes this incident constitutes a diversionary tactic aimed at shifting public attention away from pressing national challenges, including LGBT issues, failed formula “1-3-3”, rising cost of living, increasing fuel prices, increasing utility tariffs, and what it describes as the government’s failure to deliver on key policy promises.

The NPP calls on all Ghanaians to remain vigilant and to resist any attempts to undermine democratic freedoms. The Party further urges the relevant authorities to uphold the rule of law, respect due process, and safeguard the fundamental rights of all citizens.

Mr. Asiedu Nketia, however, expressed gratitude to supporters and voters for their contribution to the party’s electoral victory, noting that the success was driven largely by grassroots efforts.

He also urged members to reward hardworking executives during the ongoing branch reorganisation, emphasising the need to retain dedicated individuals ahead of future elections.

Speaking during his “Thank You Tour” of the Ashanti Region, Mr. Asiedu Nketia said the NDC remains committed to inclusiveness, insisting that all Ghanaians are considered equally for opportunities in government.

According to him, individuals are given positions based on their ability to contribute to national development, not their ethnic background.

The exercise, carried out by the NAIMOS Enchi Task Force on Saturday, April 11, 2026, between 1400 and 1630 hours, followed intelligence reports of ongoing illegal mining in the area.

Officers who moved to the site observed active operations, including the pumping and washing of minerals directly within the river, raising concerns about environmental degradation and water pollution.

During a search of a wooden structure located about 45 metres from the mining site, the team retrieved three pump-action guns and 37 cartridges.

They also recovered two excavator control monitors believed to be linked to the illegal activities. Structures suspected of supporting the operations were dismantled and set on fire.

All seven suspects were arrested at the scene without resistance. The foreign nationals were identified as Lu Weiykng, Zhou Xuanbai, Tan Zhongqiang and Zhu Jiping, while the Ghanaian suspects were named as David Done, Santos Adaboo and Naya Sampana.

The Ghanaian suspects have since been handed over to the Boinso Police Station for further investigations, as authorities continue efforts to clamp down on illegal mining activities across the country.

No NDC member should defend Sedina Tamakloe – Akwatia MP https://www.adomonline.com/no-ndc-member-should-defend-sedina-tamakloe-akwatia-mp/ Mon, 13 Apr 2026 12:11:21 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2650739 The Member of Parliament for Akwatia, Bernard Bediako Baidoo, has cautioned communicators of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) against defending the extradition of former MASLOC CEO Sedina Tamakloe Attionu.

According to him, the party was founded on the principles of probity and accountability, and therefore individuals who violate the law must be allowed to face the full rigours of justice. He stressed that political affiliation should not be used as a shield against accountability.

He further noted that the Accra High Court gave Sedina Tamakloe Attionu ample opportunity to appear and defend herself, but she failed to do so, resulting in her being tried and convicted in absentia.

His comments follow a decision by a United States District Court approving her extradition to Ghana to serve a 10-year prison sentence for causing financial loss to the state. The ruling came after a formal request by the Government of Ghana seeking her return.

Court documents indicated that the U.S. court found sufficient legal grounds under the extradition treaty between Ghana and the United States, noting that the offences for which she was convicted also constitute crimes under U.S. law.

Sedina Tamakloe Attionu, who has been residing in the United States, is expected to be handed over to Ghanaian authorities after the necessary administrative processes are completed.

Speaking in an interview on Adom TV’s Badwam programme, Lawyer Bediako said the development should serve as a lesson to public officials and political actors to act responsibly in the discharge of their duties.

He also cautioned the New Patriotic Party (NPP) against protesting when similar legal actions are taken against their former appointees, insisting that the law must be applied fairly and consistently.

He added that the situation should prompt Ken Ofori-Atta to reconsider his decision not to return to Ghana to account for his stewardship.

Jobs concerns high among NDC delegates despite strong optimism – Global InfoAnalytics https://www.adomonline.com/jobs-concerns-high-among-ndc-delegates-despite-strong-optimism-global-infoanalytics/ Mon, 13 Apr 2026 12:07:01 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2650724 A new survey has revealed a mixed outlook among National Democratic Congress (NDC) delegates, with widespread concern about job creation challenges but strong optimism about future improvement.

The Global InfoAnalytics poll shows that 78% of delegates are worried about job opportunities, while 13% are indifferent and 9% say they are not concerned.

Despite these concerns, 88% of respondents expressed confidence that the employment situation will improve.

Analysts say the findings point to a “dual mindset” within the party’s grassroots—frustration over current economic conditions, but continued belief in the party’s ability to deliver solutions.

The report notes that although job concerns remain widespread, particularly amid high youth unemployment and ongoing economic pressures, confidence in future progress remains strong.

The survey also highlights slight variations across age groups, with delegates aged 25–34 showing the highest levels of concern and slightly lower optimism compared to older respondents.

The MP, who also serves as Deputy Minister for Transport, said: “I fought tirelessly to secure 100 buses to reduce congestion in our nation,” adding that she intends to apply the same determination to addressing road challenges in Jomoro.

In a social media post on Monday, April 13, 2026, under the theme “Today’s Agenda: The Big Push!”, she called for unity in tackling the constituency’s infrastructure challenges.

“As we confront Ghana’s urgent 2026 road infrastructure agenda, we, as one united community, Jomoro! stand strong,” she wrote.

She reiterated her role in securing the buses, stating: “As a Member of Parliament for the good people and Deputy Minister for Transport, I fought tirelessly to secure 100 buses to reduce congestion in our nation. By God’s grace, they are now in the country, a testament to our relentless effort, and very soon, they will be unveiled on our roads.”

Madam Affo-Toffey said the same commitment would now be directed toward improving roads in Jomoro.

“The state of our roads is deplorable, with potholes, danger, and utter neglect. My people have cried out, and I do not take this cry lightly,” she said, adding that addressing the issue is her top priority.

She assured residents of her commitment, saying: “To the good people of Jomoro, I stand firmly with you; together, we press on. Be assured, our collective hope will not be in vain. The transformation of Jomoro roads is not a distant promise but a reality we are diligently working to deliver.”

Pope Leo says he will ‘speak out loud’ against war after Trump attack https://www.adomonline.com/pope-leo-says-he-will-speak-out-loud-against-war-after-trump-attack/ Mon, 13 Apr 2026 10:22:13 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2650689 Pope Leo has said he will continue to “speak out loud” against war, after the US president launched an unusual and scathing attack over his opposition to US immigration policy and the war in Iran.

Donald Trump accused the pontiff of being “WEAK on Crime and terrible for Foreign Policy” in a Truth Social post, later telling reporters he was “not a big fan”.

The Pope told reporters en route to Algeria that he did not want to get into a debate with Trump but would continue to speak out against war.

He has been a staunch critic of the Iran war, calling Trump’s threat to destroy Iranian civilisation “unacceptable” and calling for him to find an “off-ramp” to end the conflict.

In general, it is rare for a pope to directly address statements by world leaders.

There are more than 70 million Catholics in the US, about 20% of the population. They include Trump’s Vice-President JD Vance.

Trump’s remarks came as the pontiff embarked on an 11-day trip to Africa, his second major foreign trip since being elected last year.

The US president wrote in Sunday’s post that the Pope “should get his act together” and said he was “weak on nuclear weapons”, apparently referring to Tehran’s attempts to become a nuclear power, cited as one of the reasons for the US and Israel going to war with Iran.

He also suggested that the pontiff was elected “because he was American, and they thought that would be the best way to deal with President Donald J Trump”.

“If I wasn’t in the White House, Leo wouldn’t be in the Vatican.”

Asked by reporters later to explain the post, he said: “I don’t think he’s doing a very good job, he likes crime, I guess.”

Trump added: “He’s a very liberal person, and he’s a man who doesn’t believe in stopping crime, he’s a man who doesn’t believe we should be toying with a country that wants a nuclear weapon so they can blow up the world.”

Reuters Pope Leo wearing papal cap and robes walks off a plane as a man in a dark suit behind him holds a white parasol over him.
Pope Leo has arrived in Algeria at the start of an 11-day tour of Africa

The remarks drew immediate criticism from Catholics, with one expert comparing the comments to the Pope’s relationship with fascist dictators in World War Two.

“Not even Hitler or Mussolini attacked the Pope so directly and publicly,” said Massimo Faggioli, quoted by Reuters.

The Pope has used numerous public addresses to denounce global conflicts and urge de-escalation in the Middle East.

When Trump threatened Iran, saying that “a whole civilisation will die tonight”, he responded by saying the statement was “truly unacceptable”.

In his Easter address, the pontiff said without mentioning any countries directly that people were growing accustomed to violence and indifferent to thousands of deaths.

“Let those who have weapons lay them down. Let those who have the power to unleash wars choose peace,” he said.

He has also criticised Trump’s hard-line immigration policy, questioning whether it was possible for someone to be “pro-life” – a term normally associated with opponents of abortion – if they agreed with what he described as the “inhuman treatment of immigrants”.

Pope Leo is seen as continuing the humanitarian tradition of his predecessor Pope Francis, who said Trump was “not Christian” during the 2016 election campaign because of his anti-immigrant language.

Trump described the late Pope as “disgraceful”.

Odau Group breaks away from Akyem Abuakwa area after 250 years https://www.adomonline.com/odau-group-breaks-away-from-akyem-abuakwa-area-after-250-years/ Mon, 13 Apr 2026 10:11:38 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2650672 The Chiefs, Queen Mothers, and Elders of the Odau group in the Benkum Division of the Akyem Abuakwa Traditional Area have announced their separation from the Akyem Abuakwa Traditional Area after 250 years of allegiance.

In a historic move, the Odau group has officially named their new leader, Odeniho Okukudurofo Ofosu Kwabi Ayebiahwe, and declared Etwereso as their new traditional capital.

The decision follows a long-standing disagreement with the Akyem Abuakwa Overlord, Osagyefo Amoatia Ofori Panin, which resulted in the withdrawal of his Daasebre title.

A Historic Breakaway

The Chiefs, Queen Mothers, and Principal Elders of the Odau group, under the Benkum Division of the Akyem Abuakwa Traditional Area, have formally announced their decision to break away from the Akyem Abuakwa Traditional Council. This marks the end of a 250-year relationship between the two factions.

Speaking on behalf of the Queen Mothers, Principal Elders, and Chiefs, Odau Twafohene Baffour Osei Afrifa confirmed the separation. He emphasized that the Odau group, now led by Odeniho Okukudurofo Ofosu Kwabi Ayebiahwe, has officially withdrawn from the Akyem Abuakwa Traditional Council, naming Etwereso as its new traditional capital.

Reasons for the Separation

The decision comes after years of tension with the Akyem Abuakwa Overlord, Osagyefo Amoatia Ofori Panin, and the subsequent withdrawal of the Daasebre title. The Overlord also imposed a restriction on the Odau leadership’s access to Ofori Panin Fie, further escalating the situation.

Baffour Osei Afrifa noted that this breakaway is a significant moment in the history of the Akyem people, marking the culmination of years of unresolved disagreements and deliberations.

A New Era for the Odau Traditional Area

Baffour Osei Afrifa emphasized that the Odauhene will preside over and make decisions on all traditional matters within the newly established Odau Traditional Area. He also stated that the group will seek government recognition by requesting a certificate for its own Traditional Council, as its citizens will no longer be under the jurisdiction of the Akyem Abuakwa Traditional Authority.

The New Overlord Speaks

In a ceremony to announce the separation, the newly crowned leader of the Odau Traditional Area, Odeniho Okukudurofo Ofosu Kwabi Ayebiahwe, addressed the gathering. He expressed deep gratitude to the Aduana Royal Family of Odau and the principal elders for placing their trust in him, especially after being neglected by the Akyem Abuakwa. He assured the people of his commitment to protecting their land, resources, and culture.

The newly appointed overlord also called for unity among the people of Odau, urging them to collaborate and work towards improving the development and well-being of their traditional area.

30 face prosecution as Kwadaso Municipal cracks down on sanitation offenders https://www.adomonline.com/30-face-prosecution-as-kwadaso-municipal-cracks-down-on-sanitation-offenders/ Mon, 13 Apr 2026 09:55:13 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2650653 The Kwadaso Municipal Assembly in the Ashanti Region has intensified its sanitation enforcement efforts, with 30 residents currently facing prosecution for sanitation-related offences.

The crackdown aims to ensure strict adherence to proper waste disposal practices across the municipality.

Municipal Environmental Health Officer Genevieve Anthony disclosed this during the commissioning of four skip containers by the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE), aimed at improving waste management in the area.

She explained that the strict enforcement of sanitation by-laws, which began in March 2026, has resulted in offenders being summoned to court every two weeks.

“We started the legal action by prosecuting offenders, resulting in a significant number of people being sent to court. Every two weeks, we send people to court for breaching sanitation rules as part of our enforcement efforts,” she said.

Genevieve noted that some cases have been concluded with fines, while others remain pending, with bench warrants issued for certain offenders.

She added that about 30 people have so far been taken to court, with fines ranging from GH¢1,100 to GH¢3,000, and in some cases, additional penalties including imprisonment.

She urged residents and businesses to comply fully with sanitation regulations to safeguard the environment and promote public health.

Meanwhile, Municipal Chief Executive Eric Assibey said weak enforcement and declining public discipline over the years had contributed significantly to sanitation challenges in the municipality.

He disclosed that several initiatives are being implemented to improve sanitation standards across the area.

He also cautioned drivers and their assistants, particularly those operating around Sofoline, against disposing of waste in unauthorised places, warning that offenders will be punished.

“As a passenger, if you eat in a vehicle, you should either dispose of the waste in your personal bag or leave it in the car, as it is the responsibility of the driver’s mate to clean the vehicle upon arrival,” he said.

He urged residents to take responsibility for maintaining a clean environment, declaring zero tolerance for sanitation offenders.

According to police, the driver veered off the road into a bush while attempting to escape from six armed men, three of whom were wielding pump-action guns.

During the attack, one of the passengers, identified as footballer Dominic Frimpong, sustained gunshot wounds and was rushed to the Bibiani Government Hospital, where he later died.

Another victim, 52-year-old George Owusu Afriyie, was robbed of GH¢4,500.

Police say two spent BB cartridges were retrieved from the scene to aid investigations.

According to the ministry, the album reflects “freedom in Christ, worship as the response of the redeemed, and mission as the calling of a people sent in His name.”

Prudential Bank strengthens strategic supplier partnerships at 2026 Supplier Conference https://www.adomonline.com/prudential-bank-strengthens-strategic-supplier-partnerships-at-2026-supplier-conference/ Mon, 13 Apr 2026 08:32:09 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2650616 Prudential Bank Limited (PBL) has once again demonstrated its commitment to building stronger, more strategic supplier relationships following the successful hosting of its 2026 Supplier Conference under the theme “Partnering Our Suppliers to Deliver Excellent Customer Service.”

The conference, now in its third edition, brought together key suppliers and vendors of the Bank, as well as various internal and external stakeholders from across the country, to discuss efficiency, sustainability, and the role of technology in strengthening the supply chain. The event provided a platform for open dialogue, feedback, and collaborative planning for the year ahead.

Addressing the session held in Accra, the Executive Head of Operations at PBL, Felix Apau Awuku, reinforced the Bank’s commitment to nurturing mutually beneficial relationships. He noted that suppliers are integral to the Bank’s ability to deliver value to customers and should be regarded as partners in progress rather than transactional stakeholders.

Mr. Awuku highlighted the Bank’s priorities for the year—efficiency, sustainability, and technology—noting that Prudential Bank has streamlined processes to reduce lead times and improve reliability, and is actively exploring AI-driven insights to anticipate demand and optimise supply chain performance.

“Trust that we will honour our commitments. Trust that we will grow together. Trust that when challenges arise, we will tackle them side by side,” Mr. Awuku assured the suppliers. “Together, we are not just suppliers of greatness. We are protectors of our progress.”

He encouraged suppliers to use the conference not only to exchange ideas but to strengthen relationships, saying the Bank has renewed energy and shared goals to build a supply chain that is efficient, ethical, sustainable, and future‑ready.

Earlier in a welcome address, Head of Procurement at the Bank, Carlis Ebow Arko, emphasized that the purpose of the meeting was simple: to build better working relationships, solicit feedback, and improve collaboration going forward.

He highlighted that the Bank views its suppliers not merely as vendors, but as strategic partners who play a vital role in delivering value, indicating that strong supplier collaboration significantly enhances operational efficiency and contributes meaningfully to overall business performance.

Laying further emphasis on this strategic partnership, Mr Arko stated . “All over the world, suppliers play an important role in ensuring that operational efficiency is achieved. Statistically, businesses that partner with suppliers in digital integration see a 25% improvement in business performance.”

The conference ultimately served as a platform to renew commitments, exchange ideas, and strengthen the shared vision of building a resilient, ethical, and future-ready supply chain. Prudential Bank continues to demonstrate that excellent customer service begins with strong, trusted relationships behind the scenes.

Ghana to honour astronaut Christina Koch for historic Artemis II mission https://www.adomonline.com/ghana-to-honour-astronaut-christina-koch-for-historic-artemis-ii-mission/ Mon, 13 Apr 2026 07:59:00 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2650575 Ghana is set to formally honour American astronaut Christina Hammock Koch following her historic journey around the Moon, as the government moves to recognise her ties to the country and her role in a landmark space mission.

The Minister for Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, disclosed in a Facebook statement that diplomatic arrangements are underway for President John Dramani Mahama to honour the astronaut at a mutually agreed time. The gesture, he said, will be on behalf of the people of Ghana in recognition of her achievements and her association with the University of Ghana.

Mr Ablakwa praised the Artemis II crew for what he described as a remarkable scientific and human achievement, noting that their safe return after travelling farther from Earth than humans have done in decades demonstrated “that there can be no boundaries to human ingenuity and courage.”

The recognition follows the successful completion of the Artemis II mission, regarded as a defining moment in modern space exploration. Organised by NASA, the mission marked the first crewed lunar flight in more than 50 years and saw astronauts travel to the far side of the Moon before returning safely to Earth.

Ms Koch, who served as a mission specialist aboard the Orion spacecraft, played a key role in monitoring critical onboard systems, including life support, navigation and communications. She became the first woman to travel into deep space and complete a lunar flyby.

Her achievement has drawn attention in Ghana, where she previously studied under an exchange programme at the University of Ghana. The institution has since celebrated her milestone as a testament to the global reach and impact of its academic programmes.

The Artemis II crew also included mission commander Reid Wiseman, pilot Victor Glover — the first Black astronaut to venture beyond low Earth orbit — and Canadian astronaut Jeremy Hansen. Together, they conducted critical tests to validate systems for future missions aimed at returning humans to the lunar surface.

Damang Mine Deal: Mireku Duker questions four-day tender process https://www.adomonline.com/damang-mine-deal-mireku-duker-questions-four-day-tender-process/ Fri, 10 Apr 2026 19:23:33 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2650108 Former Deputy Minister of Lands and Natural Resources, George Mireku Duker, has raised concerns over the tender process used in awarding the Damang mine, questioning the short timeline given for bids.

Speaking on Asempa FM’s Ekosii Sen show, Mr. Duker criticised what he described as a rushed process, noting that the tender was reportedly opened within just four days.

He argued that such a timeframe is inadequate for a thorough and competitive bidding process.

According to him, standard practice requires sufficient time—often at least a month—for companies to assess requirements and submit competitive bids, including detailed evaluations of financial and technical capacity.

“There are many questions surrounding the E&P Damang mine deal. Before transferring a mining operation to another company, it is essential to assess their history, benefits, and other relevant factors. If you plan to issue a tender, it should be done at least a month in advance of the opening. Why would you open a tender and then only allow four days for financial capacity checks? What’s the rush? This has never happened before,” he stated.

Mr. Duker also questioned the mode of advertisement, suggesting that limiting the announcement to the Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources website may have restricted wider participation within the mining industry.

He maintained that several qualified mining firms could have expressed interest if given adequate time and proper notice, adding that the situation raises concerns over transparency and due process.

“There are other mining companies in the country that could also bid for this mine. While they claimed to have advertised on the Ministry’s website, is that website even up to date? How many people in the industry actually visit that site? Opening a tender there seems questionable. I have not seen a company that opens a tender within just seven days,” he added.

His appeal comes after a man identified as Kwasi Ansah Eku, popularly known as “Dragon”, was shot dead during a police operation linked to the dispute.

According to a police situational report, the deceased allegedly opened fire on officers while resisting arrest, leading to a gun battle that lasted about two hours.

The operation, carried out in the early hours of April 10, involved personnel from the Eastern Regional Police Intelligence Directorate with support from the Ghana Police Service headquarters.

The exercise forms part of efforts to arrest individuals captured in viral videos allegedly participating in violent clashes during the Awukudae celebration on April 8.

Speaking on the development on Asempa FM, Mr. Awuku said although calm is gradually returning, tension remains in the area.

He urged residents to allow the law to take its course, calling for a peaceful resolution to the dispute.

“We are a beautiful state; we shouldn’t let this divide us,” he stated.

Two injured, one critical after wall collapse at Wawasi https://www.adomonline.com/two-injured-one-critical-after-wall-collapse-at-wawasi/ Fri, 10 Apr 2026 19:19:17 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2650096 Two persons have sustained serious injuries, with one in critical condition, following a wall collapse at Wawasi in the Obuasi East Municipality of the Ashanti Region.

The victims, a man and a woman, were reportedly sitting in front of a house when the structure suddenly gave way between 8:00 pm and 9:00 pm on Thursday.

An eyewitness, Joseph Appiah, said the victims were immediately rushed to the AGA Health Foundation for treatment. Due to the severity of the injuries, one of them was later referred to the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital for specialised care, while the other remains in stable condition at the AGA Hospital.

A relative of the victims, Yaa Kunadu, who was selling food nearby at the time, confirmed that the victims were not engaged in any activity when the incident occurred.

The family has since appealed to government and relevant authorities to intervene, calling for the removal of a telecommunications mast mounted on the building.

They expressed fears that the structure, believed to belong to Globacom, poses a continued risk to residents and may have contributed to the collapse.

The decision was announced at a stakeholder meeting attended by the District Chief Executive, security agencies, clergy, assembly members, and operators of bars and hotels.

Addressing the media, Nana Ababio said the committee has been tasked to take immediate action to curb the growing menace, which he noted is tarnishing the image of Nkaseim.

He warned individuals involved in such activities to desist or face strict enforcement by security agencies, adding that the town will no longer tolerate practices that threaten public safety.

The chief also cautioned residents against interfering in police work, particularly those who attempt to secure the release of suspects arrested for drug-related offences or prostitution.

Meanwhile, the Ahafo Regional National Security Coordinator, Alhaji Ahmed Mohammed, reaffirmed the resolve of security agencies to clamp down on offenders.

He stressed that authorities will deal decisively with perpetrators, warning that force will be applied if necessary to restore order and sanitise the community.

Speaking on Asempa FM’s Ekosii Sen show, Mr MacCarthy maintained that his publication on the NLA Director-General’s alleged demand for a $6,000 rent allowance was accurate and contained no falsehood.

He clarified that his report stated the Director-General demanded the allowance, not that he had received it, adding that the Authority’s response did not dispute the core issues he raised.

Mr MacCarthy also said concerns he raised about the “good causes” fund under the Authority remain unanswered.

The National Lottery Authority has, however, denied claims that its Director-General requested a salary increase and a $6,000 monthly rent allowance.

They described the allegations as false, clarifying that the Director-General has not applied for any salary increment.

According to the Authority, ongoing discussions relate to a broader review of conditions of service for all staff and management, not a specific request by the Director-General.

NLA dismisses claims of CEO salary hike and $6,000 rent allowance request https://www.adomonline.com/nla-dismisses-claims-of-ceo-salary-hike-and-6000-rent-allowance-request/ Fri, 10 Apr 2026 15:59:42 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2650078 The National Lottery Authority (NLA) has denied claims that its Director-General requested a salary increase and a $6,000 monthly rent allowance.

Speaking on Asempa FM’s Ekosii Sen show, Head of Corporate Affairs, Maame Kessewaa Dolphine, described the allegations as false, clarifying that the Director-General has not applied for any salary increment.

She explained that ongoing discussions relate to a broader review of conditions of service for all staff and management, not a specific request by the Director-General.

According to her, the current conditions of service, including rent allowance, date back to 2015 and apply to all eligible staff, adding that previous Director-Generals also benefited from the same provisions.

She further noted that although a proposal to review these conditions has been initiated, it is yet to be approved and is currently before the Fair Wages and Salaries Commission for guidance.

Her comments follow allegations by Charles MacCarthy that the NLA boss had requested a significant salary increase and had already withdrawn a large rent allowance.

“The salary increment is usually led by the local union and key members of the executive management after negotiations, then it goes to the board for approval. This year, no salary increase has been granted. The board approval on the salary increment we have been working with was signed in 2015,” she said.

She added: “A proposal to review the conditions of service has been made, but the board advised that we compare with other state institutions, and the Public Services Commission further advised that we seek guidance from the Fair Wages and Salaries Commission. The proposal is currently with the Fair Wages Commission, and we are awaiting feedback.”

YEA clears majority of beneficiary arrears, assures completion of outstanding payments https://www.adomonline.com/yea-clears-majority-of-beneficiary-arrears-assures-completion-of-outstanding-payments/ Fri, 10 Apr 2026 15:12:00 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2650065 The Youth Employment Agency (YEA) has announced that it has successfully processed allowance payments for its beneficiaries, with the majority receiving all outstanding arrears.

In a statement issued by its Corporate Affairs Directorate, the Agency disclosed that while most beneficiaries are now fully paid, a section is yet to receive allowances for either February or March due to differences in deployment and engagement timelines across various modules.

“A number of beneficiaries currently have only the month of March pending, others February, which is being processed for payment,” the statement said.

“As such, depending on one’s specific deployment and engagement period, beneficiaries are either fully paid or awaiting only the March allowance.”

The Agency also urged beneficiaries who have not yet received payment alerts to remain calm, attributing the delay to technical challenges with the banking payment platform.

“Validated beneficiaries who have not yet received payment alerts are kindly advised to exercise patience, as this may be due to technical delays associated with the banking payment platform. All payments will be completed in due course,” it assured.

YEA further revealed that deployment and engagement under its Arabic Module are currently underway, with validation exercises expected to be completed within the month to enable the commencement of payments for beneficiaries under that category.

Reaffirming its commitment to improving service delivery, the Agency noted that steps are being taken to ensure prompt and consistent payment of allowances. “Significant efforts continue to be made to streamline processes and eliminate delays,” the statement added.

The Agency also expressed appreciation to beneficiaries for their cooperation, stating: “YEA expresses its sincere appreciation to all beneficiaries for their patience, understanding, and continued dedication.”

In a statement dated April 10, 2026, the group warned that the system has disrupted operations at the ports, accusing it of generating excessive duty charges, causing delays in cargo clearance, and increasing demurrage and rent costs for importers.

TAGG further questioned the legality of the system, alleging that it is being managed by Truedare Investment Limited, which it claims lacks the required expertise.

The group announced plans for nationwide industrial action from April 13 to April 17, during which importers, freight forwarders, and agents are expected to suspend operations at all ports and entry points. It has also directed members to wear red armbands in protest.

TAGG is demanding the immediate suspension of the system, a review of valuation processes, and financial relief for affected traders.

It added that legal action has already been initiated against the relevant authorities, while urging government to intervene urgently to address the situation.

Asanko Gold supports road rehabilitation to ease transport challenges in Amansie West https://www.adomonline.com/asanko-gold-supports-road-rehabilitation-to-ease-transport-challenges-in-amansie-west/ Fri, 10 Apr 2026 12:32:26 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2649967 Asanko Gold Ghana Limited is working with the Amansie West District Assembly to revive road rehabilitation efforts by addressing fuel constraints affecting maintenance equipment.

Under the District Road Improvement Programme (DRIP), the Assembly has had access to machinery for reshaping roads. However, high fuel costs have limited its ability to sustain operations across affected communities.

The intervention is expected to accelerate ongoing works and improve access routes that have, for years, posed challenges to transportation, economic activity, and service delivery.

The Amansie West District Coordinating Director, Okrah Thomas Kwame, said poor road conditions continue to affect the district’s ability to retain essential workers.

“Many workers posted to the district do not stay long due to the condition of the roads. It affects teachers, nurses, and even security personnel,” he said.

Mr. Okrah Thomas Kwame commended the company for the support, describing it as a collaborative effort involving the Assembly, the company and community leaders.

“This intervention by Asanko management will go a long way to ease some of these challenges. It is a collaboration between Asanko, the Assembly and the community leaders,” he noted.

Residents and traditional authorities have also raised concerns about the broader impact on livelihoods and local development. Chief of Manso-Tetrem, Nana Kwesi Okoh II, described the support as timely, noting that improved roads would enhance mobility and economic activity.

Despite ongoing efforts by the Assembly using its own equipment, progress has been uneven due to resource constraints.
To address this, Asanko Gold Ghana Limited has provided a GHS200,000 cheque to support fuel supply for road rehabilitation activities across host communities.

Mr. Jerry Duah, the Stakeholder Engagement Unit Manager at Asanko, said the intervention forms part of a structured approach to supporting development outcomes in the district.

“This is not a handout. It is a deliberate investment to support government capacity and deliver measurable impact,” Mr Duah said. He added that improved road infrastructure would enhance mobility, support economic activity, and contribute to safer and more efficient operations.

The collaboration brings together the District Assembly, traditional authorities, and the private sector in a coordinated effort to improve access and reduce travel time across communities.

The company has previously supported similar road improvement efforts in the Amansie South District and plans to extend this support to other assemblies within its catchment area.

The initiative is expected to ease movement within the district while demonstrating how targeted public-private collaboration can address infrastructure gaps in mining regions.
