Speaking to the media after presenting the petition on Tuesday, July 31, PNP leader Janet Nabila condemned the circumstances surrounding the Chief Justice’s suspension.

She accused the Mahama administration of trying to exert undue control over all three arms of government and described the suspension process as “a political witch hunt.”

Janet Nabila expressed concern about what she sees as a pattern of victimisation against women, warning that the ordeal faced by Justice Torkornoo threatens Ghana’s democratic and judicial integrity.

“We came to Manhyia to petition the Asantehene because we believe our traditional authorities must intervene when state institutions fail. As women, we are deeply disturbed that a female Chief Justice is being targeted in this way. I wept listening to her speak about her suffering,” she said.

She also criticised the timing of the government’s actions, pointing to the National Day of Prayer and Thanksgiving.

“You cannot genuinely pray and give thanks while acting with such vindictiveness. What we need is a National Day of Repentance,” she added.

Responding to claims of bias for not speaking out during the removal of former Electoral Commission Chairperson Charlotte Osei, Nabila denied any double standards, insisting the PNP’s position is based on principle, not politics.

The party is calling on Otumfuo Osei Tutu II to use his moral authority and influence to ensure justice and fairness in the ongoing process.

Speaker announces plans to introduce local languages in parliamentary debates https://www.adomonline.com/speaker-announces-plans-to-introduce-local-languages-in-parliamentary-debates/ Tue, 01 Jul 2025 13:34:57 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2550081 Speaker of Parliament, Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin, has revealed that Members of Parliament (MPs) will soon be permitted to use local Ghanaian languages during parliamentary debates.

This initiative aims to promote Ghana’s cultural identity and make legislative proceedings more inclusive and accessible.

Speaking at the launch of the Open Parliament Action Plan, the Speaker highlighted the importance of language in national development and democratic participation.

“No society develops with the language of another society. We want our language to be heard on the floor. So, we are going to start very soon,” Mr. Bagbin stated.

He explained that Parliament’s Standing Orders already allow MPs to use their native tongues as long as they provide an English translation.

“It is captured in our standing orders for all MPs to use their mother tongue, provided they can symphoniously translate into the official language of English,” he added.

To facilitate this change, the Speaker announced plans to recruit language experts and interpreters who will offer real-time translations during debates.

“Very soon, we will employ experts in these languages to come and support us as translators,” he confirmed.

I look forward to seeing Ghanaians travel abroad for leisure, not survival – Archbishop Duncan-Williams https://www.adomonline.com/i-look-forward-to-seeing-ghanaians-travel-abroad-for-leisure-not-survival-archbishop-duncan-williams/ Tue, 01 Jul 2025 11:43:47 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2550070 The Presiding Archbishop and General Overseer of Action Chapel International, Archbishop Nicholas Duncan-Williams, has called for a renewed vision of Ghana where citizens thrive locally and no longer feel the need to travel abroad in search of better opportunities.

Delivering a passionate address at the National Day of Prayer and Thanksgiving held on July 1 in Accra, Archbishop Duncan-Williams expressed hope for a future where Ghanaians only travel abroad for leisure—not survival.

He encouraged citizens to embrace their homeland, pursue education locally, and strive for success within Ghana.

“We must build a nation where opportunity exists for all, where success does not depend on leaving our shores,” he said.

Archbishop Duncan-Williams also urged President John Dramani Mahama to continue working tirelessly to make Ghana a more prosperous and equitable nation.

Reflecting on Ghana’s post-independence progress, he noted that the country once outpaced nations like Singapore, China, and Malaysia. However, he lamented that those nations have now leapt ahead, while Ghana struggles to keep pace.

National Prayer and Thanksgiving Day, a step in the right direction – Krachi MP https://www.adomonline.com/national-prayer-and-thanksgiving-day-a-step-in-the-right-direction-krachi-mp/ Tue, 01 Jul 2025 11:09:25 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2550015 The Member of Parliament for Krachi East, Nelson Kofi Djabab, has described the newly instituted National Day of Prayer and Thanksgiving as “a step in the right direction,” urging Ghanaians to use the day for reflection, unity, and a return to spiritual values.

Speaking on JoyNews’ AM Show on Tuesday morning, Mr. Djabab commended the national leadership for setting aside July 1st for prayer and thanksgiving, stressing the importance of God’s guidance in Ghana’s journey as a nation.

“The National Day of Prayer is very important,” he said. “Our forefathers began the struggle for independence and sovereignty with God. Ghanaians knew God long before the arrival of the Europeans. As Mr. Monney rightly said, we cannot do this just by our own might or strength, but only with the help of God.”

He emphasized that the day should not be treated as a mere formality but as a reminder of the values behind Ghana’s independence and republican status.

“As we pray and seek God’s intervention, we must not forget why we fought for independence—why Ghana became a republic among the nations in the West African sub-region,” he said. “In 1960, we lifted the flag of Ghana high. We pledged to work hard to ensure that Mother Ghana stands tall, and this day reminds us of that promise.”

Earlier this year, President John Dramani Mahama officially declared July 1st, traditionally observed as Republic Day, as Ghana’s National Day of Prayer and Thanksgiving.

The President said the initiative recognises the exceptional religious harmony the country enjoys and offers a moment for national reflection and spiritual renewal.

“One of Ghana’s greatest blessings is the harmony with which we practise our diverse faiths. Christians, Muslims and traditionalists — we worship differently, but we work together as one people. This is a national treasure that we must never take for granted,” President Mahama stated.

Mr. Djabab echoed this sentiment, saying the day speaks to the very identity of the Ghanaian people.

“This is not just a ceremonial occasion; it is a national call to action,” he added. “This day speaks to the heart of who we are as Ghanaians — spiritually grounded, resilient, and united.”

He called for responsibility and national effort.

“We must pray, yes, but we must also work. Faith without effort is incomplete. Let us lift Ghana up in prayer and then rise to build the Ghana we want.”

Abuakwa South MP urges Mahama to halt new 21% non-life insurance tax https://www.adomonline.com/abuakwa-south-mp-urges-mahama-to-halt-new-21-non-life-insurance-tax/ Tue, 01 Jul 2025 10:13:43 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2549988 The Member of Parliament for Abuakwa South, Dr. Kingsley Agyemang, has raised serious concerns over the government’s proposed taxation of general insurance services, warning that it could jeopardize the survival of Ghanaian-owned insurance firms and lead to significant job losses within the sector.

The Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) has announced the introduction of a 15% Value Added Tax (VAT) on non-life insurance premiums, effective July 1, 2025. The new tax will apply to policies covering areas such as property, health, and travel, though motor insurance will remain exempt.

The policy forms part of measures outlined in the 2025 national budget aimed at broadening the tax base and increasing revenue for essential public services. In line with this, Enterprise Insurance has announced that it will implement the 15% VAT along with an additional 6% levy on all non-motor insurance policies, as mandated by the VAT (Amendment) Act, 2023 (Act 1107).

In a media interview, Dr. Agyemang issued an urgent appeal to President John Mahama to halt the rollout of the tax increases, describing them as a combined 21% tax burden on non-life insurance policies. He noted that the measure comes at a time when public interest in insurance remains worryingly low.

He cautioned that imposing such levies would not only discourage current and potential policyholders but could also drive smaller, local insurance providers—many of which already operate on narrow profit margins—into collapse.

“This policy will hit Ghanaian-owned businesses the hardest,” Dr. Agyemang warned. “If these companies fold, we’re not just losing businesses—we’re losing thousands of jobs and displacing skilled professionals.”

He further emphasized the strategic role of the insurance sector in ensuring economic stability and employment, pointing out that many of the most vulnerable companies are indigenous and form the backbone of the industry.

Dr. Agyemang urged President Mahama to suspend the planned tax and instead engage with industry stakeholders in constructive dialogue to explore more sustainable revenue strategies that do not endanger local enterprises or livelihoods.

“This is a time for inclusive policy-making,” he said. “Let us work together to support homegrown businesses—not tax them out of existence.”

His remarks come amid growing unease among players in the insurance industry, who fear the new tax regime could undermine recent efforts to increase insurance penetration and rebuild public trust in the sector.

55% of Ghanaians support ‘Dumsor Levy’ – Global InfoAnalytics https://www.adomonline.com/55-of-ghanaians-support-dumsor-levy-global-infoanalytics/ Tue, 01 Jul 2025 09:46:10 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2549951 A new survey by Global InfoAnalytics has revealed a surprising level of public support for Ghana’s recently suspended Energy Sector Levy, commonly known as the Dumsor Levy.

Contrary to widespread perceptions of opposition, the poll indicates that 55% of Ghanaian voters support the levy, which adds GH₵1 to every litre of fuel. According to the findings, 22% of voters opposed the levy, while a significant 23% remained neutral.

The survey was conducted by Mussa K. Dankwah, Pollster and Head of Research at Global InfoAnalytics, using probability random online sampling from May 10 to May 20, 2025. It involved 1,092 respondents and has a 99% confidence level with a margin of error of ±3.82%.

The Dumsor Levy—officially the Energy Sector Levies (Amendment) Act, 2025—was introduced to tackle Ghana’s mounting energy sector debt, which stood at over US$3.1 billion as of March 2025. It also aimed to secure funds for procuring liquid fuels for thermal power plants, in a bid to ensure a stable electricity supply and prevent a return to the country’s notorious erratic power outages, locally known as dumsor.

Despite these intentions, the levy, which was initially set to take effect on June 9, met immediate resistance from key stakeholders, including transport unions and the Minority in Parliament. Mounting public pressure led the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) to first delay and then indefinitely suspend its collection. The government cited global crude oil price volatility as justification—a reason critics widely dismissed.

However, Mussa K. Dankwah’s findings now paint a more nuanced picture of public sentiment.

The strong level of support suggests that many Ghanaians may view the levy as a necessary, albeit difficult, sacrifice to ensure consistent and reliable power supply—a problem that has long plagued the nation and severely impacted businesses and daily life.

The high costs associated with unreliable electricity—such as damaged equipment and dependence on expensive generators—may have shaped this pragmatic perspective among voters.

The release of the survey also comes at a time when Ghanaians are facing additional financial strain from a 2.45% increase in electricity tariffs, effective July 1, 2025, as announced by the Public Utilities Regulatory Commission (PURC).

This added cost underscores the financial burden on consumers, making the apparent support for another levy—even one currently suspended—a notable and unexpected development.

The results from Global InfoAnalytics could reignite policy discussions around the Dumsor Levy and its possible reintroduction. The data suggests that, despite initial resistance from organized groups, a silent majority of Ghanaians may prioritize energy stability, even if it comes with an additional financial burden.

The decision now rests with the government—how it responds to this emerging public sentiment could shape the future of Ghana’s energy sector reform.

Nkwanta conflict will not prevent GES from conducting WAEC exams – GES PRO https://www.adomonline.com/nkwanta-conflict-will-not-prevent-ges-from-conducting-waec-exams-ges-pro/ Tue, 01 Jul 2025 09:18:46 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2549770 The Ghana Education Service (GES) has assured the public that the ongoing conflict in the Nkwanta South Municipality of the Oti Region will not disrupt the conduct of the 2025 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) for final-year students in the area.

Speaking on The Pulse on Joy News on Monday, June 30, the Head of Public Relations at GES, Daniel Fenyi, stated that despite the prevailing security concerns, adequate measures are being put in place to ensure that candidates can write their examinations without obstruction.

“The assurance they can get from us as the Ghana Education Service is that they won’t miss the WASSCE. We are putting in place every measure to ensure that they write the WASSCE with their colleagues all across the country, and we are making sure that the conflict goes beyond them so they can’t be punished for what they didn’t cause. So I can assure them that they will not miss this examination,” he said.

Mr. Fenyi’s comments follow the violent incidents that erupted in the municipality last week, claiming the lives of four individuals, including a final-year student of Nkwanta Senior High School who was reportedly killed by a stray bullet while taking his mock examination.

The incident has since led to the temporary closure of all schools in the area.

He emphasised that GES is committed to protecting the academic progression of students, particularly those at critical transitional stages, and will not allow the unrest to derail their educational journey.

Three other residents have also been confirmed dead as a result of the violence, which has heightened fear among parents and school authorities.

Security forces have since been deployed to the area to maintain order and restore calm.

TI-Ghana and CDD-Ghana renew calls for political finance reform https://www.adomonline.com/ti-ghana-and-cdd-ghana-renew-calls-for-political-finance-reform/ Mon, 30 Jun 2025 08:24:57 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2549563 Transparency International-Ghana (TI-Ghana) and the Ghana Centre for Democratic Development (CDD-Ghana) have renewed their call for comprehensive political finance reforms in Ghana, highlighting the link between unregulated campaign financing and rising corruption.

At a multi-stakeholder forum held in Accra on June 27, the two leading civil society organisations stressed the urgent need for a new Political Party Financing Law to improve transparency, curb illicit campaign funding, and expand political participation for marginalised groups, including women, youth, and persons with disabilities.

TI-Ghana and CDD-Ghana revealed that the cost of running for Parliament is now estimated at GHS 4 million, while presidential campaigns cost as much as US$100 million—a situation they say fuels corruption, undermines democracy, and blocks equal participation.

Among the key reforms proposed are:

  • Defined campaign periods to limit excessive spending;

  • Mandatory publication of campaign accounts;

  • Limits on donations from individuals and foreign entities;

  • Stronger enforcement mechanisms to prevent abuse of incumbency;

  • Promotion of gender and youth inclusion through conditional state support.

The groups also advocated for the separation of political finance regulation from the Electoral Commission’s current mandate and called for verified donor identities to ensure transparency.

In addition to domestic reforms, TI-Ghana and CDD-Ghana urged the Government of Ghana to co-sponsor a resolution on Article 7.3 of the United Nations Convention Against Corruption (UNCAC) at the upcoming CoSP 11 in Doha, Qatar.

Wassa Damang chief calls for promotion of community cooperative mining in Ghana https://www.adomonline.com/wassa-damang-chief-calls-for-promotion-of-community-cooperative-mining-in-ghana/ Mon, 30 Jun 2025 08:09:14 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2549554 Nana Enimere Kwaw II, Chief of Wassa Damang in the Western Region, has made a strong appeal to the Government of Ghana to promote community cooperative mining as a strategic tool for inclusive, responsible, and sustainable local development.

He emphasized that cooperative mining, when managed by local communities with appropriate regulation and support, can empower grassroots populations, ensure environmentally responsible practices, and significantly boost economic growth in mining areas.

Wassa Damang, he noted, is well-positioned to serve as a pilot community for this initiative. By integrating the town into a cooperative mining framework, government agencies can more effectively monitor and support small-scale mining while safeguarding natural resources.

A central aspect of the initiative involves large-scale mining companies releasing mine waste materials to local communities for value-added activities.

Nana Enimere Kwaw II explained that these waste rocks, when processed, can be used to manufacture products like tiles, glass, and residual gold—opening up avenues for entrepreneurship, innovation, and job creation in Damang.

Under his leadership, the community has already attracted interest from potential investors eager to collaborate on mine waste transformation projects.

He revealed that Damang is on the cusp of securing a $20 million investment for the soon-to-be-launched Damang Mining Community Development Hub.

This hub will focus on training, innovation, and the development of mining-related value chains aimed at sustainable community development.

Nana Enimere Kwaw II stressed that the Damang model demonstrates the potential of cooperative mining when combined with visionary traditional leadership, government backing, and private sector participation.

He urged national authorities to adopt community cooperative mining as a nation-building strategy—not merely a mining policy—to foster shared prosperity and inclusive development across Ghana.

Rev. Odonkor also called on Christians to actively spread the gospel, referencing Christ’s instruction to His followers before His ascension.

He highlighted the need to decentralize church operations by forming smaller groups to make pastoral work more effective and personal.

The newly elevated Dompoase District will oversee 14 outstations, having been carved out of the Tutuka District.

In his address, Adansi Dompoasehene, Okofo Kwabena Bonsu, reminded congregants that living a Christlike life means avoiding gossip and embracing truthfulness.

Rev. Francis Ofori Atta, the newly appointed Dompoase District Minister, also emphasized the Church’s responsibility to reach out to surrounding communities with the gospel.

He expressed concern about the growing tendency among the youth to prioritize money over faith, urging them to seek God first in all things.

The elevation of the Dompoase congregation to District status marks a significant milestone in the Church’s growth and outreach efforts in the Asante South Presbytery.

Christians urged to fully participate in national prayers and thanksgiving service https://www.adomonline.com/christians-urged-to-fully-participate-in-national-prayers-and-thanksgiving-service/ Sun, 29 Jun 2025 18:02:07 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2549476 Prophet Joshua Kofi Appiagyei has called on all Christians and Ghanaians to actively participate in the upcoming National Prayers and Thanksgiving Service, set to take place on Tuesday, July 1, 2025, in all 16 regions and 261 districts across the country.

The nationwide event, initiated by President John Dramani Mahama, marks Ghana’s 65th anniversary as a Republic. It aims to unite citizens in spiritual reflection, gratitude, and a renewed commitment to national unity and development.

Speaking ahead of the event, Prophet Appiagyei encouraged believers from all denominations to come out in their numbers and pray for the country.

He emphasized that in this period of economic recovery, political division, and global challenges, the role of the Church in national intercession is more critical than ever.

The call was made during a National Thanksgiving and Prayer Service held by the Christ Apostolic Church International (CACI), Dzodze Central, as a lead-up to the national event.

For his part, Rev. Daniel Okyere Philix, District Pastor of CACI Dzodze, explained that the church’s early observance forms part of its monthly “30 Days of Prayer” initiative, under the theme: “Arise and Build the Kingdom of God.”

He noted that the program is dedicated to interceding for the nation, the Church, and individual members.

The National Prayers and Thanksgiving Service is expected to bring together churches, leaders, and citizens in a moment of collective spiritual renewal and national reflection.

Obuasi Methodist Basic School launches 125th anniversary, appeals for infrastructure support https://www.adomonline.com/obuasi-methodist-basic-school-launches-125th-anniversary-appeals-for-infrastructure-support/ Sun, 29 Jun 2025 15:57:15 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2549464 As part of its 125th anniversary celebrations, Obuasi Methodist Basic School has launched an appeal for urgent infrastructure support to improve teaching and learning conditions for its students.

Speaking at the launch ceremony, Headteacher Yaw Okyere Ghansah highlighted the school’s pressing needs, including a new classroom block, an ICT laboratory, and a perimeter fence wall.

He revealed that the school, which has served the community for over a century, is currently facing severe infrastructural challenges due to its age.

In an interview with Adom News, Mr. Ghansah disclosed that some of the existing classroom blocks have deteriorated into potential death traps, posing a serious risk to students and staff.

He added that the school, with a student population of about 800, has only one toilet facility with six units, lacks an ICT lab, and has no fence to ensure safety.

“These conditions are deeply worrying and affect the quality of education we can offer,” he said. “We are appealing to the government, NGOs, philanthropists, and the general public to come to our aid.”

Also present at the event was the Obuasi West Municipal Education Director, George Alfred Koomson, who echoed the call for support. He emphasized that improved infrastructure can boost students’ morale and academic performance, citing research to support his claim.

Mr. Koomson appealed to old students and benevolent individuals to support their alma mater and help restore the school’s legacy as a center of excellence in education.

The 125th Anniversary and Homecoming celebration aims not only to reflect on the school’s long-standing contributions to education in Obuasi but also to mobilize resources for its future.

Girl Child Coordinator raises alarm over sanitary pad shortage in Asutifi South https://www.adomonline.com/girl-child-coordinator-raises-alarm-over-sanitary-pad-shortage-in-asutifi-south/ Sun, 29 Jun 2025 14:31:51 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2549456 The Girl Child Coordinator for the Asutifi South Education Directorate in the Ahafo Region, Faustina Xorla, has expressed deep concern about the negative impact of menstrual hygiene challenges on the education of schoolgirls in the Seinchem Circuit.

Speaking to Adom News during the presentation of 384 sanitary pads and 400 exercise books to students from seven junior high schools, Madam Xorla revealed that many girls are forced to use unsafe alternatives such as cement paper, rags, and toilet rolls during their menstruation due to their families’ inability to afford sanitary pads.

The donation, made by the District Chief Executive (DCE) for Asutifi South, Benjamin Assabil Donkor, benefited students from Manhyia, Sunkwa, Seinchem Islamic, Kwaku Nyumah, Adwumaye, Seinchem R/C, and Seinchem D/A Junior High Schools.

“These unhygienic practices not only endanger the health of the girls but also cause them to miss school, affecting their academic progress,” Madam Xorla stated.

She commended the DCE for his timely support, noting that the donation would help alleviate the challenges many girls face during their periods.

DCE Benjamin Donkor, in his remarks, emphasized that his office is committed to promoting menstrual hygiene in the district.

He added that beyond the provision of pads, the girls also received education on menstrual health—a critical step toward long-term change.

“This initiative is not a one-time gesture. It has become a permanent part of my administration’s support for girls’ education and well-being,” he assured.

The arrest was part of a joint operation involving the Chief Executive Officer of the Minerals Development Fund (MDF), her team, and personnel from the Ashanti South Regional Police Command, led by Regional Operations Commander ASP Enoch Boateng.

The suspects—Li Quan, 44; Lu Jianzheng, 36; Li Xuyu, 47; and Su Shanxing, 63—were allegedly mining illegally along the two rivers, which are key sources of drinking water for several nearby communities. Their activities have reportedly led to the destruction of forest cover equivalent to about ten football fields.

Despite laws prohibiting foreigners from participating in small-scale mining, the four were found operating heavy machinery at the site. During the operation, 11 excavators were seized.

Parts of four machines were removed to immobilize them, while the remaining seven were transported to the Regional CID in Bekwai.

Additionally, three pump action guns were recovered from the suspects.

The operation highlights the ongoing fight against illegal mining and environmental degradation in Ghana’s mining communities.

Legon Lodge leads tree-planting drive at University of Ghana to combat climate change https://www.adomonline.com/legon-lodge-leads-tree-planting-drive-at-university-of-ghana-to-combat-climate-change/ Sun, 29 Jun 2025 13:11:23 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2549439 In a heartwarming display of community spirit and environmental stewardship, Legon Lodge has partnered with the University of Ghana to embark on an ambitious tree-planting exercise aimed at combating climate change, improving air quality, and enhancing biodiversity on the university’s iconic campus.

The exercise, held in the Little Legon area of the University, saw members of Legon Lodge team up with the university’s Grounds Unit to plant over 120 trees in just one morning.

The initiative was not only a contribution to a greener environment but also a conscious effort to nurture the historical relationship between the lodge and the institution from which it draws its name and heritage.

Among the species planted were Dwarf Coconut, Mango, and Orange trees—chosen for their environmental benefits, aesthetic value, and potential to provide shade and nourishment to future generations on campus.

The seedlings were generously supplied by the Forestry Commission, underscoring the collaborative spirit of the event.

The initiative drew participation from brethren of other lodges within the District Grand Lodge of Ghana of the English Constitution, including Sir Charles, Harmonic, and Amity Lodges—turning the exercise into a colourful fraternity gathering with a shared cause.

Armed with shovels, watering cans, and an infectious sense of camaraderie, the brethren worked side by side with the university’s grounds staff, replacing old trees and introducing fresh saplings to rejuvenate the green spaces.

Speaking at the close of the exercise, the Curator of the University of Ghana’s Grounds Department, Philip Quaye, expressed heartfelt gratitude to Legon Lodge and its supporting lodges for what he described as “a timely, thoughtful, and impactful gesture.”

“This initiative not only adds life to our campus but also reminds us of the importance of partnerships in sustaining the environment,” he remarked.

Worshipful Master of Legon Lodge, Samuel Botchwey, in brief remarks, reaffirmed the lodge’s commitment to community service and environmental conservation.

“As part of our ethos of giving back, this exercise is a small but meaningful way of playing our part in safeguarding the environment for generations to come.”

The day ended with light refreshments, brotherly conversations, and a shared sense of accomplishment—proof that when tradition meets service, meaningful change is possible.

The tree-planting exercise is expected to become an annual event on the lodge’s calendar, with plans to extend it to other public spaces in the years ahead.

Ignore fake voters’ list – GJA Elections Committee to members https://www.adomonline.com/ignore-fake-voters-list-gja-elections-committee-to-members/ Sun, 29 Jun 2025 13:03:35 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2549438 The Elections Committee of the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) has cautioned members to disregard a fake voters’ register circulating on social media ahead of the Association’s National and Regional Elections slated for Monday, June 30, 2025.

In a statement issued on Sunday, June 29, the Committee expressed grave concern over what it described as a deliberate attempt to mislead members and erode confidence in the electoral process.

“The Committee urges all members to ignore this mischievous fabrication and rely solely on the official voters’ register, which bears the signatures of both the GJA General Secretary and Treasurer,” the statement said.

Members who are uncertain about their inclusion on the official list are encouraged to verify their status via the GJA’s official website or by contacting the Elections Committee directly.

To ensure security and order, the Committee announced that the Ghana Police Service will be deployed to all regional voting centres during the election.

“Any person or group attempting to disrupt the process will be swiftly removed from the premises by the police,” the Committee warned.

It also reminded members that valid identification is required to vote. Acceptable IDs include a Ghanaian Passport, Voter ID, or Ghana Card.

“Let us all work together to ensure a peaceful and credible election. May the best candidates win – and may the GJA be the ultimate winner.”

I am a Minister of God – Kuami Eugene https://www.adomonline.com/i-am-a-minister-of-god-kuami-eugene/ Sun, 29 Jun 2025 12:25:36 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2549428 Ghanaian musician Kuami Eugene has stated that despite his mainstream success in secular music, he still considers himself a minister of God.

In an interview with Doreen Avio, the award-winning highlife artiste explained that his journey began in the church, where he was groomed both spiritually and musically. According to him, his identity as a gospel minister has not changed.

“Sometimes I see a post on social media, and somebody wants to share something—Eugene Marfo will just pop up. I’m still a minister of God, and the transition started from the church. The church taught me everything I know—how to play the piano, guitar, and everything. While I was in school, I was still doing music and playing drums for the church. I was doing music, but the push wasn’t there like I’m getting now,” he said.

Kuami Eugene also shared how a trip to the Volta Region for a gospel event played a key role in changing the course of his life and career. Invited by a friend who was a pupil teacher at the time, the trip became a turning point.

“She was a pupil teacher, and she invited me for a three-day convention with her church. I was Minister Eugene Marfo then. That was actually where I received my first pay, so shout out to that female friend of mine,” he recalled.

Following that experience, he was selected for MTN Hitmaker, where he emerged as second runner-up before being signed by Lynx Entertainment. That marked the beginning of his rise in Ghana’s music industry.

He credited God, his family, and key mentors like Richie Mensah and Eric Goka for their support in his journey.

Kuami Eugene, born Eugene Marfo, has since become one of Ghana’s most prominent musicians, known for hit songs such as Angela, Wish Me Well, Open Gate, and Monica.

He has won several awards, including Highlife Artiste of the Year and Artiste of the Year at the Vodafone Ghana Music Awards.

He is currently promoting his latest single titled Do Better.

The exercise, organized by the Newmont Ahafo Development Foundation (NADeF) in collaboration with the Gold Coast Medical Foundation, covered residents of Ntotroso, Gyedu, and Womahinso.

Out of over 400 people screened for various health conditions—including hypertension, diabetes, malaria, eye and dental issues, nutrition, and psychological wellness—hypertension and diabetes emerged as the most prevalent.

Speaking to Adom News, Co-Founder of the Gold Coast Medical Foundation, Dr. Kwaku Boakye, expressed concern over the increasing number of cases.

While medications were provided to affected individuals, he urged residents to take their health seriously by regularly visiting nearby health facilities for check-ups.

“Even though we’ve given medication, people need to understand that routine medical reviews are critical to safeguarding their health,” he emphasized.

Executive Secretary of NADeF, Elizabeth Opoku-Darko, explained that the initiative forms part of Newmont Gold Ghana’s commitment to improving the well-being of communities within its operational areas.

“Health is wealth. That’s why we partnered with the Gold Coast Medical Foundation to support this screening. And this won’t be a one-time event—we’ll continue this effort annually to ensure lasting impact,” she said.

The screening forms part of broader community development efforts by NADeF aimed at promoting health awareness and disease prevention in the Ahafo Region.

SANCOK Foundation CEO calls for economic justice during global week of action on finance https://www.adomonline.com/sancok-foundation-ceo-calls-for-economic-justice-during-global-week-of-action-on-finance/ Sun, 29 Jun 2025 12:21:30 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2549422 As part of the Global Week of Action on Finance, the CEO of the Sanitizes Communities Konnect Foundation (SANCOK), Jacob Fenteng, has called for urgent economic justice for First Nations and local communities across the Global South.

Speaking at a commemorative event held at Tanyigbe Senior High School in the Ho Central Municipality of the Volta Region, Mr. Fenteng stressed that for far too long, marginalized communities have been excluded from decisions impacting their land, livelihoods, and future.

He noted that while the global financial system continues to benefit the powerful, ordinary people in Ghana and other parts of the Global South continue to suffer from poverty, environmental degradation, land dispossession, and historic injustices.

“Debt cancellation is essential. Unjust and illegitimate debts are crippling our essential services and stalling development. We need a fair system that serves people, not profits,” Mr. Fenteng said.

As part of the celebration, students of Tanyigbe SHS organized a float through the main streets of the town, holding placards with messages such as: “Save My Future,” “Use Taxes for Public Services, Not Debt Services,” “Make Earth Green Again,” “Pay Up Your Climate Debt,” and “We Want to Live.”

The headmaster of the school, Etse Godstime Seake-Kwawu, revealed in an interview with Adom News that the growing economic pressures highlighted during the global campaign have mentally affected some staff and parents. He appealed to the government and relevant stakeholders to provide psychological and social support.

Meanwhile, the Chief of Tanyigbe, Togbe Ameworkunu Danku IV, pledged the commitment of traditional leaders to environmental preservation through tree planting. He appealed for government support to expand reforestation efforts in the area.

The Global Week of Action on Finance continues to serve as a platform for advocacy and solidarity in pushing for a more just and inclusive financial system worldwide.

We’ve had days where the tension was so high – Kuami Eugene on relationship with KiDi https://www.adomonline.com/weve-had-days-where-the-tension-was-so-high-kuami-eugene-on-relationship-with-kidi/ Sun, 29 Jun 2025 11:49:39 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2549420 Ghanaian highlife star Kuami Eugene has admitted that there were moments of tension in his relationship with fellow musician KiDi during their time together at Lynx Entertainment.

In an interview with Doreen Avio, Kuami acknowledged long-standing rumours about a strained relationship between the two, revealing that differences in personality and perspective sometimes created distance.

“There’s some truth to what you just said, actually. There’s a side of the story from the early days with Lynx Entertainment and the entire family—it was sweet because we were all coming up together. But people have different perceptions of others and how they carry themselves. KiDi’s character is very different from mine; we were two different people,” he explained.

Kuami added that while he tries to remain composed, he is also mindful of not being perceived as too soft or passive in the industry.

“I tried as much as possible to stay in the middle, but I don’t want to be too calm and lose respect. I don’t want to be too soft because, you know, when you’re too soft, people stop respecting you and may even bully you. Lynx taught me a lot, and I’ve actually loved the brotherhood with KiDi in particular. We’ve had days where the tension was so high that, sometimes, for maybe a whole year, we wouldn’t see each other—even though we were both at Lynx Entertainment,” he said.

According to him, their physical separation after moving out of the Lynx Entertainment residence also contributed to the emotional distance.

“I moved from Lynx—I left the camp and rented a place elsewhere. Later, he moved too. I had a studio in my house, and he also had one in his. Eventually, we’d only meet at events, maybe in the States or when we were traveling abroad together. The ‘always together’ phase lasted for about two or three years,” he noted.

Despite the ups and downs, Kuami Eugene expressed his admiration and goodwill towards KiDi, calling him a big brother and praying for his continued success.

“I actually love and respect KiDi as a big brother. Every single good thought he’s had about me, I appreciate it as a brother. I wish him expansion all the time. Anytime I see his posts on social media, I include them in my prayers—that his songs blow up. Because when we all succeed, it brings glory to Lynx Entertainment, and that’s what I pray for. You can’t do much to change people’s narratives, but I respect and love KiDi so much as a big brother,” he said.

Kuami Eugene and KiDi, both signed by Lynx Entertainment, have collaborated on several successful songs, including Spiritual and Ohemaa.

The duo have also performed together at major events both in Ghana and abroad, solidifying their status as two of the most influential voices in Ghana’s contemporary music scene.

Ayariga defends 2.45% electricity tariff hike as necessary to save ECG https://www.adomonline.com/ayariga-defends-2-45-electricity-tariff-hike-as-necessary-to-save-ecg/ Fri, 27 Jun 2025 20:58:22 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2549163 Majority Leader Mahama Ayariga has defended the Public Utilities Regulatory Commission’s (PURC) approval of a 2.45% increase in electricity tariffs, calling it a critical measure to address the rising debt of the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG).

Speaking in Parliament on Friday, June 27, Mahama Ayariga explained that although economic indicators such as inflation, fuel prices, and exchange rate levels have remained relatively stable, ECG’s growing financial challenges make the tariff adjustment unavoidable.

“Last year, there was an attempt to block the PURC from adjusting tariffs, so no adjustments were made during that period. Now, ECG is burdened with significant debt. If we don’t act by adjusting tariffs, ECG will collapse. They won’t have the funds to procure inputs needed to keep generators running, and this will lead to power outages,” he cautioned.

His remarks were in response to concerns from the Minority Caucus, who questioned the justification for the tariff hike amidst perceived economic improvements.

Mahama Ayariga emphasized that consumers must bear part of the cost of electricity production.

“The bills must be paid. Improved macroeconomic indicators don’t erase ECG’s debt. The PURC is only doing its job, and part of the burden must be shouldered by consumers,” he stated.

He also announced that the Minister for Energy and Green Transition will appear before Parliament next week to provide further explanation on the tariff review and its implications.

The new tariff is set to take effect on July 1, 2025.

Cargo truck driver arrested after smashing police vehicle in Damongo chase https://www.adomonline.com/cargo-truck-driver-arrested-after-smashing-police-vehicle-in-damongo-chase/ Fri, 27 Jun 2025 17:00:41 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2549094 There was drama on the Busunu-Damongo stretch of the Fufulso-Sawla highway on Friday when a cargo truck driver allegedly resisted arrest and damaged a police patrol vehicle during a high-speed confrontation.

The driver, whose name has been withheld, was transporting tomatoes and other food items from Techiman in the Bono Region to Damongo in the Savannah Region.

According to the police, the driver refused to stop at a checkpoint near the outskirts of Damongo despite being signalled to do so by officers of the Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD). He reportedly sped off, covering nearly half a kilometre before being forced to stop.

Eyewitnesses, including members of a news team at the scene, described the incident as chaotic and dangerous.

The truck allegedly nearly ran over road users before it was finally brought to a halt with the help of residents and nearby motorists.

During the altercation, the driver is said to have smashed the side mirror of the police patrol vehicle, escalating the situation further.

A police source indicated that the truck’s brakes were allegedly faulty, which may have contributed to the driver’s failure to stop.

Both the driver and his mate claimed the vehicle had experienced an overflow and insisted that was why they did not stop for inspection.

The two are currently in custody at the Savannah Regional Police Headquarters in Damongo, where investigations are ongoing.

BoG urges journalists to deepen knowledge to curb misinformation https://www.adomonline.com/bog-urges-journalists-to-deepen-knowledge-to-curb-misinformation/ Fri, 27 Jun 2025 14:15:28 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2549132 The Bank of Ghana (BoG) has emphasized the importance of journalists—particularly reporters, morning show hosts, and radio presenters—being well-versed in financial and economic issues to enhance accurate reporting.

According to the Central Bank, a well-informed media landscape plays a vital role in building a well-informed society.

The Director of Communications at BoG, Bernard Otabil, made this call during the opening of a three-day media capacity-building workshop in Koforidua, the Eastern Regional capital.

The workshop, organised by the BoG for journalists in the Eastern Region, aimed to equip 25 selected participants from various media houses with a deeper understanding of economic and financial reporting.

Participants were taken through critical topics including: accurate reporting, monetary policy practice in Ghana, inflation dynamics, recent developments in the foreign exchange market, responsible borrowing, understanding the central bank’s balance sheet, macroeconomic analysis, and the significance of microeconomic indicators.

Mr. Otabil stated that misinformation and disinformation in the media space often stem from the limited number of journalists who are well-versed in financial and economic matters.

To address this challenge, the Bank of Ghana has embarked on a series of regional media engagements aimed at strengthening its relationship with journalists across the country and improving public access to reliable information.

So far, the Central Bank has trained journalists from the Volta, Western, and Ashanti Regions, reaching a total of 75 participants.

Mr. Otabil encouraged reporters to develop a stronger interest in financial and economic matters. He also highlighted international best practices, noting that in countries such as the United Kingdom, media houses often prefer subject-matter specialists in financial journalism rather than generalist reporters.

He added that the Central Bank has become more transparent in its operations than ever before.

“Governor Asiama, at the start of every MPC meeting, engages the media in a kick-off session, explaining his expectations in the context of global and domestic economic developments,” Otabil said.

He further noted: “Another significant innovation by Governor Asiama is the publication of the submissions of the Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) members. Since the Bank adopted the inflation-targeting monetary policy framework in 2007, this is the first time such submissions are being published, bringing Ghana at par with other central banks using similar frameworks.”

For his part, the Eastern Regional Chairman of the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA), Maxwell Kudekor, noted that the GJA has over the years collaborated with several institutions to train journalists in specialized fields to foster a well-informed society.

He emphasized that capacity building empowers journalists to improve their skills, acquire new knowledge, and remain competitive in their careers.

Mr. Kudekor commended the Bank of Ghana for organising the seminar, describing it as a valuable effort to enhance the knowledge of journalists in economic and financial reporting to promote accuracy in such coverage.

Franklin Cudjoe calls for end to partisan bias in public sector recruitment https://www.adomonline.com/franklin-cudjoe-calls-for-end-to-partisan-bias-in-public-sector-recruitment/ Fri, 27 Jun 2025 12:14:38 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2549072 Founding President of IMANI-Ghana, Franklin Cudjoe, has called for an end to entrenched political bias in public sector employment, describing it as a dangerous injustice that undermines national development and erodes public trust in state institutions.

Speaking on Joy FM’s Super Morning Show on Friday, Mr Cudjoe criticised the persistent politicisation of recruitment and dismissal processes within the public service, referencing the recent dismissal and subsequent reinstatement of staff at the Bank of Ghana.

“It is a technical thing that we need to stop. I don’t think it helps us,” he stated.

“I’m asking myself, when will this stop? I think it will stop when we show the public how recruitment is done in public service,” he added.

Mr Cudjoe had earlier expressed similar concerns in a Facebook post, where he condemned the reported dismissals at the Central Bank, suggesting they were politically motivated.

His comments reflect growing public concern over claims that individuals are often denied appointments or unfairly dismissed from public service based on real or perceived partisan affiliations.

He urged political leaders to pursue an inclusive and merit-based recruitment framework that prioritises competence and national interest over party loyalty.

Ghana’s civil service is politicised, not neutral – Kpebu https://www.adomonline.com/ghanas-civil-service-is-politicised-not-neutral-kpebu/ Fri, 27 Jun 2025 11:32:53 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2549065 Private legal practitioner Martin Kpebu has asserted that Ghana’s civil service is not politically neutral, contrary to public perception. According to him, partisan interests have long influenced appointments and dismissals within the public sector.

Speaking on Joy FM’s Super Morning Show on Friday, Mr. Kpebu argued that successive governments have historically treated the civil service as an extension of their political machinery, often placing individuals aligned with their agenda in key positions.

“We say the civil service is neutral, but it is not true. If you listen to and read papers from very high-ranking officials, when it comes to the civil service, they are partisan. They help the government in power,” he stated.

“So, when they help the government in power and the next one comes and says, ‘No, what you and the previous government were doing doesn’t align with my manifesto,’ you will go. So, when I hear people saying the civil service is neutral, I’m like, you’re joking.”

Mr. Kpebu’s comments come amid ongoing public debate over the recent dismissal and reinstatement of over 100 Bank of Ghana staff—a development that has revived discussions on political interference in public service employment.

He cautioned that political influence in the civil service is deeply ingrained and unlikely to be eliminated anytime soon.

“It can never totally go away, that one is clear, based on experience. From the nature of human beings, no, it cannot end,” he said.

Speaking on Accra-based Citi FM on Friday, June 27, Mr. Vanderpuye stated that each district now has a dedicated team of 17 individuals—comprising one coordinator and 16 equipment operators—to drive the implementation of DRIP, which focuses on rehabilitating roads in underserved communities.

He disclosed that all recruits are undergoing rigorous training to ensure the safe and efficient handling of heavy-duty equipment.

“Some of the people who were previously operating the machinery lacked adequate training,” he said. “There’s a lot to learn when managing equipment like tipper trucks. We want to get it right this time.”

Currently, regional coordinators are receiving orientation in Ada, with district coordinators scheduled to follow. In addition, all equipment operators nationwide will receive practical, hands-on training to build their capacity for the role.

Mr. Vanderpuye also revealed that President John Dramani Mahama has assured the team of a formal employment warrant. This would allow the recruits to be absorbed into the local government structure as official staff of the various district assemblies, enabling them to deliver effectively at the grassroots level.

The District Road Improvement Programme is a key part of the government’s plan to enhance rural connectivity, reduce transportation challenges, and promote economic development through improved infrastructure.

Chief Justice has the right to speak out – Former Deputy Attorney-General defends [Video] https://www.adomonline.com/chief-justice-has-the-right-to-speak-out-former-deputy-attorney-general-defends-video/ Thu, 26 Jun 2025 20:13:48 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2548769 Former Deputy Attorney-General Diana Asonaba Dapaah has defended Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo’s decision to publicly address the nation.

According to her, it was the Chief Justice’s only opportunity to speak after being denied a fair hearing in the ongoing removal proceedings against her.

Speaking in an interview on Asempa FM’s Ekosii Sen show, Diana Dapaah emphasized that fundamental human rights, enshrined in the Constitution, are just as important as the legal provisions governing the removal of a Chief Justice under Article 146.

“She has filed a judicial review application, which is now a public document before the court. The Attorney General, who is usually a respondent in such cases, has the chance to respond. So the process can still be addressed through the appropriate legal channels,” she said.

Ms. Dapaah further expressed admiration for the Chief Justice’s courage and resilience, calling her actions a defense of democracy.

“She could have resigned, but she chose to stand her ground. This is not just her fight; it’s a fight for democratic integrity. I admire her strength, and I’m very proud of her.”

Justice Torkornoo, suspended in April 2025 by President John Mahama following a prima facie case established by the Council of State, broke her silence at a press conference on June 25.

She raised serious constitutional and procedural concerns about the process being used to remove her from office.

COKA calls for unity and reform at NPP Chairmen Caucus 2025 Conference https://www.adomonline.com/coka-calls-for-unity-and-reform-at-npp-chairmen-caucus-2025-conference/ Thu, 26 Jun 2025 15:31:01 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2548730 The New Patriotic Party (NPP) took a significant step toward revitalizing its internal structures and energizing its base as the 2025 Conference of the NPP Constituency Chairmen Caucus of Ghana commenced at the Longford Royal Center in Kumasi, running from June 20 to 22.

Themed “Building Momentum: The Role of NPP Constituency Chairmen in Uplifting the Party Towards 2028 and Beyond,” the conference gathered over 275 constituency chairmen, party executives, and dignitaries to discuss strategy, internal cohesion, and preparations for the 2028 general elections.

Delivering the keynote address, Chairman Odeneho Kwaku Appiah (COKA) inspired the crowd with a message of unity, discipline, and renewal.

His speech was a passionate call to action that resonated deeply with party members grappling with internal challenges and public perception issues following the 2024 elections.

The Chairman emphasized the dangers of internal division and personal agendas, urging leaders to set aside religious, tribal, and economic differences in favor of collective strength. Quoting Psalm 133:1, COKA declared, “Behold, how good and pleasant it is when brothers live together in unity!”

He reminded the audience that the path to victory in 2028 requires forgiveness, teamwork, and a strategic commitment to ethical governance.

The speech also included a proposal to revise internal qualification structures, suggesting that only those who have served at polling station or constituency levels should be eligible to contest for higher office, including regional and national executive positions.

Throughout the address, Chairman COKA invoked powerful references from Eleanor Roosevelt, Martin Luther King Jr., and African proverbs to emphasize unity, collaboration, and responsibility.

COKA also urged party executives to actively participate in decision-making, foster transparency, and embrace dissenting views within the boundaries of respectful democratic discourse.

The conference serves as a major turning point in NPP’s organizational calendar, coming at a time when party members across the country are calling for reform, renewal, and stronger leadership structures.

With Chairman COKA’s rallying message still fresh in delegates’ minds, the NPP appears poised to take the first serious step toward internal healing and political resurgence.

Education Minister urges WAEC to fast-track 2025 BECE results https://www.adomonline.com/education-minister-urges-waec-to-fast-track-2025-bece-results/ Thu, 26 Jun 2025 14:07:19 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2548687 Minister of Education, Haruna Iddrisu, has urged the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) to expedite the release of the 2025 Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) results to reduce anxiety among candidates and the general public.

Speaking at the 2025 WAEC Distinction Awards Ceremony on Thursday, June 26, the Minister commended WAEC and the Ghana Education Service (GES) for the successful organization of the nationwide exam but stressed the importance of timely results.

“Let me commend you for a very successful BECE examination. What we expect from you now is the early, timely release of the results so that anxiety and anxiousness in the students will go down,” he said.

Mr. Iddrisu also announced plans to introduce a legislative framework to reform the country’s scholarship system.

He revealed that the Ghana Scholarship Authority Bill would soon be presented to Parliament on behalf of President John Dramani Mahama.

“In the coming weeks, I will introduce the Ghana Scholarship Authority Bill to Parliament, as promised by President Mahama, to address concerns of nepotism in the scholarship award process,” he stated.

The Minister appealed to the Chairman of the Parliamentary Select Committee on Education, Peter Nortsu Kotoe, and other lawmakers to support the bill when it is laid before the House.

Ntim Fordjour condemns viral same-sex kiss at Independence Arch, blames Mahama, NDC https://www.adomonline.com/ntim-fordjour-condemns-viral-same-sex-kiss-at-independence-arch-blames-mahama-ndc/ Thu, 26 Jun 2025 13:13:21 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2548673 Member of Parliament for Assin South, Rev. John Ntim Fordjour, has strongly criticized viral images of a same-sex couple kissing beneath Ghana’s Independence Arch.

According to him, the act amounts to a desecration of a national monument and a blatant attack on the country’s cultural values.

In a tweet posted on Thursday, June 26, the MP blamed former President John Dramani Mahama and the National Democratic Congress (NDC) for what he described as the growing moral decay in society, accusing them of enabling LGBTQ+ advocacy through their leadership.

“Under Mahama & NDC, foreign gay couple boldly desecrate our national monuments: kiss under Independence Square, flaunting Ghana flag. They’re emboldened to defy the dignity and sanctity of our rich Ghanaian values right before our eyes,” Rev. Fordjour tweeted.

The backlash follows the release of photos by South African couple Lue and Rue, who visited Ghana as part of their #ShowGhanaLove campaign.

Their images, taken at iconic landmarks including the Independence Arch, were intended as a peaceful protest against Ghana’s proposed anti-LGBTQ legislation.

While the couple framed the campaign as a call for inclusion and love, the gesture has sparked outrage on social media, with critics labeling it disrespectful to Ghana’s heritage and culture.

Rev. Fordjour said the incident underscores the urgent need to pass the legislation to protect the country’s moral and cultural foundations.

“We shall end this absurdity with the bill,” he asserted.

Chief Justice’s public outburst disappointing – Lawyer Ansa-Asare [Video] https://www.adomonline.com/chief-justices-public-outburst-disappointing-lawyer-ansa-asare-video/ Thu, 26 Jun 2025 11:30:47 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2548526 Former Director of the Ghana School of Law, Lawyer Kwaku Ansa-Asare, has expressed deep disappointment over Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo’s recent public address regarding her suspension and the ongoing proceedings to remove her from office.

Reacting to the June 25 press conference held by the suspended Chief Justice, Lawyer Ansah-Asare described her actions as inappropriate and unbecoming of someone holding the highest position in the judiciary.

“I was very sad about the press conference. That’s not the way of the law,” he said in an interview on Asempa FM’s Ekosii Sen.

“If something isn’t going well, she should keep it to herself and not voice it out publicly. That’s something an ordinary lawyer like myself should do, not the Chief Justice.”

He warned that Justice Torkornoo’s comments could further damage the public’s trust in the judiciary.

“There was a survey indicating that 86% of Ghanaians do not trust the judiciary. If the head of that institution also declares she has no confidence in the system, what does that say about our justice system?”

Justice Torkornoo, who was suspended by President John Mahama in April 2025 after a prima facie case was established by the Council of State, had raised concerns about constitutional breaches and procedural irregularities in the petition to remove her.

However, Lawyer Ansa-Asare argued that the Chief Justice should have sought internal redress rather than taking her grievances to the public.

“It looks like she feels abandoned and is acting out of frustration, but we should not support her actions. As Chief Justice, she should work to restore public confidence, not undermine it,” he stressed.

In a press release dated June 26, 2025, the GHS noted that despite the World Health Organization’s decision to no longer classify COVID-19 as a Public Health Emergency of International Concern, the virus still poses a threat through seasonal outbreaks.

The GHS, in collaboration with the Noguchi Memorial Institute for Medical Research (NMIMR), is closely monitoring the situation and working with university authorities to contain the spread.

The health service has urged the public to remain vigilant and adhere to preventive measures, including wearing face masks, maintaining social distancing, practicing good hand hygiene, and seeking medical care when experiencing symptoms such as cough, fever, or difficulty breathing.

GHS reassured the public of its ongoing efforts to manage the situation and emphasized the importance of community cooperation in curbing the spread of the virus.

NDC’s push to remove Chief Justice threatens democracy – Miracles Aboagye warns [Video] https://www.adomonline.com/ndcs-push-to-remove-chief-justice-threatens-democracy-miracles-aboagye-warns-video/ Thu, 26 Jun 2025 09:59:12 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2548447 Director of Communications for the 2024 Bawumia Campaign, Dennis Miracles Aboagye, has raised alarm over what he describes as ongoing efforts by the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) to remove Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo from office.

According to him, such actions pose a grave threat to Ghana’s democracy.

Speaking in an interview on Asempa FM’s Ekosii Sen show, Aboagye expressed deep concern over the silence of Ghanaians, warning that a “dangerous precedent” is being set.

“I get the sense that the NDC has cast a spell on the country. I don’t understand why we’re not taking this matter seriously,” he said.

He noted that the fact that the Chief Justice felt compelled to address the media was a sign of desperation and a reflection of systemic failure.

“Her media engagement alone should tell us how serious this is. She’s gasping for air, crying for help, and sounding helpless—and we are all quiet.”

Justice Torkornoo, who was suspended in April 2025 by President John Mahama after the Council of State established a prima facie case against her, broke her silence on Wednesday, June 25.

She raised constitutional and procedural concerns about the petition for her removal, describing the process as politically motivated and unjust.

Miracles Aboagye echoed her sentiments, stressing that the issue extends beyond the individual and strikes at the heart of judicial independence.

“She made a very important point—it’s not about her, it’s about the process. If it succeeds with her, it can succeed with anyone. What then happens to the integrity of the judiciary?”

He questioned the government’s commitment to due process and urged Ghanaians to reflect on the broader implications.

“If this is allowed to happen, I don’t know if any law will be strong enough to safeguard the office of the Chief Justice in the future.”

Aboagye also criticized the posture of the Minister for Government Communications, claiming it contradicted the government’s narrative of adhering to due process.

“It felt more like a fight than a defense of the law,” he remarked.

“We would be doing great harm to our democracy if the NDC succeeds in removing the Chief Justice from office. This is not just about one person—it’s about protecting the soul of our justice system,” he added.

NACOC warns kebab lovers over suspected drug-laced meat https://www.adomonline.com/nacoc-warns-kebab-lovers-over-suspected-drug-laced-meat/ Thu, 26 Jun 2025 08:24:52 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2548438 The Narcotics Control Commission (NACOC) has cautioned Ghanaians—particularly kebab lovers—to be vigilant about where they buy their meat, following reports that some vendors are allegedly lacing kebab with marijuana (weed).

This alarming trend was disclosed by NACOC’s Deputy Director, Lawyer Twum Barimah, during an interview on Burning Issues on Adom FM, as part of activities to mark World Drug Day and raise awareness about drug abuse.

Mr. Barimah revealed that the Commission has received reports indicating that some kebab sellers—especially those operating at pubs—are mixing cannabis with the meat they serve.

“I want to especially caution young ladies who accompany their friends to pubs and eat kebab without knowing the source,” he said. “Some of these kebab vendors lace the meat with weed, and after consuming it, your body may start reacting in strange ways—leaving you confused and possibly endangered.”

He described the increasing use of illicit drugs among the youth as a national concern, warning that if the trend continues unchecked, Ghana may face a crisis in the near future with an unreliable youth population.

“We are witnessing an alarming rate of drug abuse among young people. If we don’t take action now, in the next five years, we may not have dependable youth to lead the nation,” he cautioned.

Mr. Barimah assured the public that NACOC is intensifying efforts to curb the spread of illegal drugs in the country. He emphasized that the Commission is focusing on cutting off the supply routes through which these substances enter the system.

“Our core mission is to eliminate illicit drugs from our society. We’re tackling it from the source, because if we can block the supply, we can prevent the abuse,” he concluded.

Twum Barimah slams embattled Chief Justice over public address [Video] https://www.adomonline.com/twum-barimah-slams-embattled-chief-justice-over-public-address-video/ Thu, 26 Jun 2025 08:17:21 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2548439 A Communications Team Member of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), Lawyer Twum Barimah, has described the recent press conference by embattled Chief Justice Gertrude Araba Esaaba Torkornoo as laughable and misleading.

Speaking on Burning Issues on Adom FM, Mr. Barimah, who also serves as Deputy Director of the Narcotics Control Commission, challenged Justice Torkornoo’s claim that she never received the petition calling for her removal from office.

According to him, the suspended Chief Justice was indeed served with the petition and even requested seven days to respond—yet former President John Dramani Mahama graciously granted her ten days instead.

“If she claims she never saw the petition, then what exactly was she responding to?” Lawyer Barimah questioned. “Let’s not joke with the intelligence of Ghanaians.”

Touching on the screening process Justice Torkornoo reportedly underwent before appearing before the committee, he dismissed her complaints as unnecessary. He argued that everyone, including lawyers and the general public, undergoes security checks when entering the Supreme Court.

“So what’s wrong if she’s scanned before meeting the committee? Even the courts have security scanners. Her complaints don’t make sense,” he stated.

Mr. Barimah also compared Torkornoo’s situation to that of former Electoral Commission Chairperson Charlotte Osei, who faced a similar probe during her tenure. According to him, Madam Osei did not resist the process or make public complaints because she understood the law and respected due process.

He expressed shock at Justice Torkornoo’s conduct, stating, “It is surprising that someone of her caliber—a lawyer and a judge—wants to disregard the constitution when the same process was applied to others.”

Responding to the Chief Justice’s concern that the committee did not allow a witness, Ernest, to testify on her behalf, Barimah reminded her that she was part of the panel of judges during the 2021 election petition that denied EC Chairperson Jean Mensa the opportunity to testify.

“She can’t now complain about procedures she once endorsed. What’s good for the goose is good for the gander,” he stressed.

Finally, Lawyer Twum Barimah slammed her request for the proceedings to be televised, saying it contradicts constitutional provisions that such hearings be held in camera.

“She’s calling for a live telecast, but the constitution is clear—such matters must be heard privately. She knows this,” he concluded.

Bawumia not to blame for NPP’s 2024 defeat – Nana Akomea https://www.adomonline.com/bawumia-not-to-blame-for-npps-2024-defeat-nana-akomea/ Tue, 24 Jun 2025 19:40:05 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2547917 Leading member of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Nana Akomea, says credible research findings have not linked the party’s 2024 electoral loss to Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia.

Speaking in an interview on Asempa FM’s Ekosii Sen, Mr. Akomea referenced a report by respected pollster Musah Dankwa, which he said identified economic hardship—not Dr. Bawumia’s leadership—as the primary reason for the NPP’s defeat.

“At the time we lost the elections, Bawumia was not the flagbearer or president. Musah Dankwa, one of the most credible researchers in the country, did not blame Bawumia,” he stated.

He also dismissed claims that Dr. Bawumia’s religious background led to voter apathy, emphasizing that party members overwhelmingly endorsed him during the NPP’s presidential primaries.

“Claims that people didn’t vote for him because he is Muslim are baseless. He secured more votes than some Christian candidates in several regions,” Mr. Akomea noted.

He cautioned aspirants in the ongoing internal race to be measured in their campaign messaging, warning against divisive narratives that could undermine party unity.

Mr. Akomea reiterated that the NPP remains a national and inclusive party, not defined by ethnicity or religion, and is well-positioned to reclaim power in 2028.

Bawumia still has a chance in 2028 – Nana Akomea https://www.adomonline.com/bawumia-still-has-a-chance-in-2028-nana-akomea/ Tue, 24 Jun 2025 19:35:09 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2547912 A leading member of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Nana Akomea, says Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia still stands a strong chance of winning the 2028 presidential election despite the party’s defeat in 2024.

He drew a parallel with former President John Mahama, who returned as the National Democratic Congress (NDC) flagbearer after losing power, suggesting that political comebacks are possible.

“Many presidents, including John Mahama, were rejected while in office but later returned to win power. So, Dr. Bawumia still has a chance to win the 2028 election,” he said.

Speaking during an interview on Asempa FM’s Ekosii Sen, Nana Akomea also cautioned against the use of hostile language during the party’s internal elections. He urged all aspirants and their supporters to conduct their campaigns with respect and decorum.

“During this election period, everyone is saying things that will persuade the delegates to vote for them, but is their argument true or not? The important thing is to be respectful in what you are saying,” he noted.

He further observed a political trend where Ghanaian presidents have historically handed over to their opponents, indicating the democratic maturity of the system.

“For the most part, since 2000, the president has handed over power to the person he defeated. Rawlings handed over to Kufuor, Kufuor handed over to President Mills, and the same happened with Akufo-Addo and Mahama,” he added.

Early Presidential Primary meant to curb division in NPP – Nana Akomea https://www.adomonline.com/early-presidential-primary-meant-to-curb-division-in-npp-nana-akomea/ Tue, 24 Jun 2025 19:31:58 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2547910 A leading member of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Nana Akomea, has explained that the party’s decision to hold its presidential primary early is aimed at reducing internal divisions and fostering unity ahead of the 2028 general elections.

Speaking in an interview on Asempa FM’s Ekosii Sen, the former Managing Director of STC said the move follows rising tensions within the party over the flagbearer race.

“The main source of division in the party often comes from the presidential primaries,” he said.

“That’s why the National Council, after thorough deliberation, overwhelmingly agreed that we should elect a flagbearer early enough to allow the party to refocus and unite.”

According to Nana Akomea, the proposal for an early primary was originally put forward by former NPP General Secretary Kwabena Agyapong, who is also a contender in the flagbearer race—proving that the decision was not made to favour any individual.

“The constitution allows for the primary to be held within two years, with at least six months’ notice. This is not about favouritism. If it were, the person who proposed it wouldn’t be a candidate himself,” he explained.

He called on party members to embrace the decision in the interest of long-term unity and grassroots cohesion.

“If you are someone who loves the party, are you not worried about the division and the turmoil among the grassroots that is boiling up because of the flagbearer race? Anyone who loves the party should support the decision.”

GTEC declares TEWU-TUC sole council rep in Universities https://www.adomonline.com/gtec-declares-tewu-tuc-sole-council-rep-in-universities/ Tue, 24 Jun 2025 14:58:01 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2547747 The Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC) has ruled that the Teachers’ and Educational Workers’ Union under the Trade Union Congress (TEWU-TUC) is the legitimate body to represent workers on the Governing Councils of public traditional universities.

In a statement dated June 18, 2025, and signed by the Director-General, Prof. Ahmed Jinapor Abdullai, GTEC noted that the decision was based on extensive consultations and legal advice following persistent disputes between TEWU-TUC and TEWU-GH over representation.

GTEC has directed all public universities to immediately swear in TEWU-TUC representatives to their Governing Councils and ensure they are granted full privileges and responsibilities associated with the role.

The Commission further instructed that members of TEWU-GH must not consider themselves council members, even if they were previously sworn in.

GTEC expressed optimism that this directive will resolve the impasse and urged all parties to cooperate for the smooth governance of tertiary institutions.

Open endorsements not wrong, but… – Henry Kokofu https://www.adomonline.com/open-endorsements-not-wrong-but-henry-kokofu/ Tue, 24 Jun 2025 13:12:28 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2547731 Former Member of Parliament for Bantama, Henry Kwabena Kokofu, has declared his commitment to rebuilding the New Patriotic Party (NPP), stressing the need for unity and internal reform ahead of the party’s 2026 presidential primaries.

Speaking in an interview on Adom FM’s morning show Dwaso Nsem, Mr. Kokofu revealed that although he was approached to contest for the NPP’s flagbearer position, he declined the offer, citing the party’s current fragile state.

“I was approached to contest as flagbearer, but I declined because I feel the party is not standing well. Where the party is right now, it’s important we change certain things internally,” he said.

Mr. Kokofu emphasized that his focus is on helping to rebuild the party using his experience, and pledged to support whichever candidate is elected, provided the person fosters unity.

“I am for the rebuilding of the party. All I care about is restoring the NPP to a strong standing. We need leadership from the flagbearer who can unify us,” he added.

He also cautioned against open endorsements, which he believes could harm party cohesion.

“Everyone has a preference, and that’s normal, but open endorsements should be discouraged. It’s not wrong legally, but for the sake of party unity and best practices, we must avoid divisive tendencies,” he said.

His comments come amid increased internal competition and growing public endorsements of aspirants ahead of the party’s primaries scheduled for January 31, 2026.

Inflation projected to drop to 16% in June 2025 – IC Research https://www.adomonline.com/inflation-projected-to-drop-to-16-in-june-2025-ic-research/ Tue, 24 Jun 2025 11:48:21 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2547682 Inflation is expected to witness another sharp decline in June 2025, falling to 16%, according to IC Research.

The anticipated drop is attributed to favourable foreign exchange pass-through and lower energy prices.

“The June 2025 CPI data window recorded a 29.5% month-on-month and 35.3% year-on-year appreciation of the Ghanaian cedi against the US dollar. This exerted downward pressure on prices of imported items with notable declines in petroleum prices and transport fares. The announced 15.0% reduction in commercial transport fares will continue to restrain transport inflation with downside spillovers for other items,” IC Research explained.

“Additionally, we estimate that the lower transport cost likely eased the month-on-month pressure observed for vegetables and tubers last month, potentially sustaining food disinflation in June. Consequently, we forecast a 240 basis points decline in the June 2025 annual inflation to 16.0%, with the month-on-month rate at 0.8%,” the report added.

Headline inflation decelerated by 280 basis points to 18.4% year-on-year in May. This marked the fifth consecutive monthly decline and brought the cumulative drop in headline inflation to 540 basis points in the first five months of 2025, compared to just 10 basis points in the same period in 2024.

According to IC Research, the rapid disinflation reflects a strong base effect, the favourable impact of the cedi’s recent appreciation, and declining petroleum product prices.

Food Inflation

Food inflation continued its downward trend, slowing by 220 basis points to 22.8% in May 2025. This was mainly due to a favourable base effect in the heavily weighted CPI basket for vegetables and tubers, which offset increases in prices of fish and other seafood.

Inflation for vegetables and tubers fell sharply by 10.3 percentage points to 24.0% year-on-year, although the month-on-month rate rose to 2.4% due to the ongoing planting season.

Non-food Inflation

Non-food inflation dropped significantly by 350 basis points to 14.4% year-on-year, continuing a seven-month streak of decline.

“Notably, we observed declines across 10 out of the 12 divisions of non-food inflation, with the weightier transport inflation tumbling by 11.8 percentage points to 3.1% year-on-year as the cedi’s appreciation ignited a reversal in energy prices with a domino effect,” IC Research concluded.
