The Asante Akyem North District Assembly has reiterated its earlier stand to kick against the construction of ranches for nomadic herdsmen and their cattle in the area.

According to the Assembly, they will continue to oppose any decision or efforts aimed at bringing back nomadic herdsmen to the area.

The position comes on the back of reports that a neighbouring town in the Sekyere Afram Plains District had allowed the ranching system.

In an interview with the District Chief Executive, Francis Oti Boateng, who denied media reports of the district’s acceptance of the ranching system, he pledged his commitment to protect farming activities in the area.

“I want to state in unequivocal terms that the Assembly has not accepted or adopted ranching as being propagated and misinterpreted by a cross-section of the people.

“As management, we hold the fort for the people of the district. We will, therefore, continue to protect and promote our farmers and support them through the Planting for Food and Jobs and the Planting for Export and Rural Development to promote the collective interest of all the people in the district,” he assured.

Over 300,000 cattle and their herdsmen were evacuated from Agogo through the Operation Cow Leg initiative with the deployment of 175 military-police joint taskforce at a period when herdsmen were always in gun battle with residents over the destruction of farms of the residents.
