Samini (L) and Sarkodie

One of the heated categories aside Reggae/Dancehall Artiste of the Year at the just ended 2019 Vodafone Ghana Music Awards was the Artiste of the Decade category.

The VGMA Board, throwing more light on the category on Facebook said “Over the last decade, they have had the biggest impact, earned multiple nominations across the years in the VGMAs, have been relevant on the Ghanaian music scene and beyond; been very influential in music and showbiz and their craftsmanship in the industry has been phenomenal!”

Musicians nominated for the category were Becca, Efya, Joe Mettle, No Tribe and Nacee. The rest were Okyeame Kwame, R2Bees, Samini, Sarkodie, Shatta Wale and Stonebwoy with Sarkodie topping the list.

Speaking for the first time after the awards ceremony, Samini said he was a little disappointed but has moved on because Sarkodie has equally put in lots of work to win the Artiste of the Decade category over the past decade.

He disclosed that, he holds nothing against the rapper though people expected him to win.

“I walked off the event after Sarkodie was announced because I was tired and a bit disappointed. And I had done interviews and thought I should win and then again I looked at the shortlist and I had nothing against Sarkodie for winning artistes of the decade – looking at how much work he has put it.

“Some people tell me I am their artiste of the decade and that means more to me than just coming on stage to collect a plague. We’ve done that so many times,” he said.

According to the HighGrade Family boss, the new crop of musicians are supposed to “fight” for awards since he did similar when we was just an up-and-coming musician.

“I am too experienced with award shows and have psyched myself against winning always. There are times that new acts come to win because it’s their peak season. The awards are important for King Promise, Kwesi Arthur and the rest. Just like how it was important to me in 2010. But after a few years, I am okay.

“The award shows is not one hundred percent credible because you don’t know how it’s done. Awards can be given to someone for special reasons,” Samini concluded.
