The Greater Accra Regional Organiser of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Anthony Nukpenu, has expressed strong dissatisfaction with the practice of government officials visiting flood-affected communities after disasters occur, describing it as unproductive and repetitive.
Speaking on Adom FM Dwaso Nsem, he argued that such visits do not solve the underlying problems of flooding and only amount to symbolism without action.
“I am not pleased with the kind of images I see on screens of ministers visiting flood-prone areas. We should stop it,” he said.
According to him, Ghana’s flooding challenge is not new and requires practical, long-term solutions rather than periodic expressions of sympathy.
“The people should not have disaster for us to go and share with them. You should have a solution,” he stressed.
Mr. Nukpenu insisted that leadership must shift from empathy-driven responses to actionable interventions, warning that continued reliance on post-disaster visits reflects poor planning and weak enforcement.
“Empathize with me for what? What’s the plan?” he questioned, adding that authorities must focus on prevention rather than optics.
He also criticised what he described as repeated failure to enforce planning regulations, especially in areas where buildings are sited on waterways and buffer zones.
