A man who assaulted a midwife at the Community 22 Polyclinic in Tema has been convicted and fined 100 penalty units by the Community 22 District Court, with additional orders including compensation and a temporary ban from the health facility.
The court also directed the convict, Desmond Bosomtwe, to pay GH₵5,000 in compensation to the complainant, Priscilla Addo, and signed a bond of good behaviour. He has further been barred from visiting the facility for 12 months, effective Tuesday, June 9, 2026, the date of judgment.
Speaking to Citi News after the ruling, the Deputy National Public Relations Officer of the Ghana Registered Nurses and Midwives Association, Philemon Gyapong, said the Association would have preferred a stiffer punishment but respects the court’s decision.
“He was made to sign a bond of good behaviour. He’s to pay a compensation of GHC5,000 to the midwife. The judiciary has acted timeously, and that is what we expected. We had hoped the gentleman would receive a stiffer punishment to serve as a deterrent to others. But that is what the law says, we accept it,” he said.
The incident occurred on Tuesday, June 2, 2026, when senior staff midwife Priscilla Addo, who was on duty, asked visitors to leave after visiting hours had ended in line with hospital regulations.
However, Bosomtwe, a relative of a patient, refused to comply. What began as a verbal disagreement escalated into an assault, which was later captured on video.
