Three people have been rushed to hospital following a serious road accident involving a tipper truck and a fuel tanker on the Accra–Tema Motorway, which also triggered a major fire outbreak late Monday night.
The crash occurred at about 23:49 hours between Saka Saka Park and Tanink Ghana when the two heavy-duty vehicles collided head-on, resulting in a violent impact that immediately set the fuel tanker ablaze.
Emergency responders from the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) were quickly deployed after an alert was received. Fire crews from the Motorway Fire Station led the initial response, with reinforcement from the Ashaiman and Tema Industrial Area Fire Stations, supported by a water tanker from the Ashaiman Municipal Assembly.
Before fire crews arrived at the scene, three occupants involved in the crash were rescued and rushed to the Tema General Hospital for emergency treatment. Their identities have been confirmed as Kwabena Agyapong, Joseph Teye Quarshie, and Aaron Kyei. Details on their current conditions have not yet been disclosed.
Firefighters battled intense flames that engulfed the tanker and spread rapidly due to fuel leakage. The blaze was brought under control after a coordinated operation, preventing what authorities say could have escalated into a major explosion along the busy motorway corridor.
The tipper truck driver was later confirmed dead after his charred remains were retrieved from the wreckage during recovery operations.
GNFS officials say the fire was fully extinguished after several hours of sustained efforts, with cooling operations and scene management continuing alongside police investigations.
Traffic along the Accra–Tema Motorway was temporarily disrupted but has since been gradually restored.
The cause of the crash and subsequent fire remains under investigation as emergency authorities assess the circumstances leading to the incident.
