Dr Eric Bossman Asare, a Deputy EC Chairperson

The Electoral
Commission (EC) has stated that it has no intention of disenfranchising any
Ghanaian in the upcoming limited registration exercise to take place at the
district level of the Commission.

The assurance follows claims by the National Democratic Congress (NDC) that a registration exercise at the district level is not in the interest of voters and is a possible way of disenfranchising most Ghanaians.

Reacting to the claims by the NDC that some districts do not have district offices and so people would have to cover long distances to get to a nearby registration centre, a deputy EC Chairperson, Dr Eric Bossman Asare said the EC is working to resolve all those concerns.

“We acknowledge that in some district headquarters it will take about 40 miles to get there but there are agencies we can team up with. These are things the Commission can easily work with the parties, civil society organisations to be able to ensure that, all these people are able to register,” he assured.

Speaking in an interview on Asempa FM’s Ekosii Sen show, Dr Asare added that their decision to register Ghanaians at the district level was in line with an upgrade of the EC’s Information Technology infrastructure.

“We have put measures
in place to get all people to register and not to disenfranchise anybody. We
(EC) are ready to go the extra mile for people who are living very far to get
registered by creating certain enabling environments so that they can go to the
headquarters of the EC in that district to go and register, we are ready to do
that,” he said.
