The pressure to give birth to sons rather than daughters can be overwhelming and sometimes heartbreaking.
But such backward cultural bias against female babies which hitherto was very prominent in Ghana appears not to depart from the minds of some people.

A young woman who only gave her name as Akosua remembers her third pregnancy with tearful dread.
Having given birth to a girl through cesarean section, she was expecting further love and support from her husband.

Akosua said when her husband found out during a private scan that the child she was expecting was a girl, he stopped taking care of them.
She told KOFI TV in an interview: “It was a completely traumatic time. I had this child growing inside, a beautiful thing but my husband was not happy because he wanted a son”.

His justification, Akosua explained is that, no one will inherent his name and properties when he departs from earth.
The distraught woman said she now begs to feed her children since her  husband has stopped taking care of them.
