The West African Examination Council (WAEC) says examination malpractice in this year’s Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) is one of the highest blaming invigilators as major culprits.
WAEC has withheld the subject results of 1,298 candidates who sat the 2017 BECE. The figure represents 0.28% of the total candidature who wrote the examination.
But Public Affairs Director of WAEC, Agnes Teye-Cudjoe explained that this excludes the subject results of candidates who were detected by the Item Differentia Profile (IDP) software to have cheated in the objective tests.
She added: “The withheld results will be released after the conclusion of investigations into various cases of examination malpractice detected during and after the conduct of the examination”.
Mrs Teye Cudjoe also blamed the situation on invigilators who were compromised, schools and candidates who breached the rules.
Meanwhile, affected students have a personal decision to rewrite their papers in February 2018.
She said it is the nearest within which they can redeem themselves.

If the malpractice was as a result of invigilating body then let go free the candidates and deal drastically with the invigilators afterwards many a time WAEC warned the invigilators to desist from that act.
