It has emerged that the New-Times Corporation, managers of the Ghanaian Times Newspaper spend over GHC 100,000 weekly in printing newspapers at Graphic Communications Group.

Chairperson of the Professional and Managerial Staff Union of the Industrial and Commercial Workers Union (ICU), Diana Boasu, disclosed this on Asempa FM’s Ekosi Sen Monday following protests by workers of the New Times Corporation against management of the company.

According to her, a company which has been re-branded should not waste such huge amount in printing outside when there is a printing department in the company, though it has been outsourced.

Workers at New Times Corporation on Monday staged a demonstration at the premises of the company to protest what they termed as poor working conditions.

The workers who were in red apparels also blocked the management of the company from entering their offices.

They also demanded the removal of their Managing Director, Carol Annang, who they accused of worsening their plights in the last few months.

According to Mrs Boasu, workers of the company have not received salary increment for the last seven years, a situation she described as very worrying.

“All promises from management has been empty for years now and so at this moment, we see it necessary to come out. Even common printer has been faulty for years and nothing is being done on it. We spend over Ghc 100,000 to print our newspapers at Graphic communications and it’s very worrying.

“We have been quiet for a long time and it is the time for us to let the whole country and the world to know that things are not working well at New Times Corporation” she cried.

Meanwhile, the Industrial and Commercial Workers Union (ICU) has backed protests by workers of the New Times Corporation against management of the company.

General Secretary of the ICU, Solomon Kotei said things should not be allowed to remain the same.

For a company like the Times, the ICU believes that more can be achieved if the right things are done and management works efficiently.

Mr Kotei added that the workers will stand firm in their resolve to get Times back to its glory days.

“They will not be the reason Times dies off. We shall resume work and we will make sure that she [the MD] does not step foot here,” he said.
