The Trade Ministry has indicated its readiness to find the best and lasting solution to the challenges in the textile industry.
Deputy Trade Minister, Carlos Ahenkorah, who disclosed this on Asempa FM’s EKOSII SEN, Wednesday said the Ministry is developing new ideas to eliminate the pirated goods on the local market.
His comment follows a decision by the Textile and Garment Workers Union of the Ghana Trades Union Congress (TUC) to demonstrate over some concerns in the sector.

An executive member of the union, Kofi Abeka, who disclosed this on Asempa FM’s Ekosiisen, said they are protesting over the failure of the anti-counterfeit taskforce set up by the government to deal with the proliferation of fake textiles on the market.
The protest is expected to take place in Accra on April 27, 2018.
But Carlos Ahenkorah believes suggestions and expertise from the workers union to find solution to the problem is needed to fight the menace.

“I don’t understand why they think going to market is the only solution to curb this issue. They know the industry, they know what people are doing to harm the industry so it is their expertise that the ministry relies on to try to fight this menace and so we are working with them.”
The Ministry, he noted attaches great importance to the textiles and garments sector because of its potential for jobs and wealth creation.
