Former National Youth Organiser of the ruling New Patriotic Party, Sammy Awuku, has debunked rumours of a possible tax increment at Ghana’s ports.
Speaking on Adom TV’s morning show, Badwam, Wednesday, Mr Awuku said taxes at the port haven’t increased since his government assumed power.

“Some of the laws were passed before 2017 January and matured during our regime so we needed to implement them and anybody at the ports can attest to this truth,” he asserted.
He explained that listening to the Finance Ministry and the Ghana Revenue Authority, it is clear the taxes at the port have not been increased.
“So if the people are claiming times are hard, then it is our duty as the government to come out and explain to the people what is happening,” he said.
“Our [the NPP] base is the business community. NPP’s orientation is a free and liberal market and so we are credited when it comes to economic reforms,” he added.

Mr Awuku, however, stated that the 2019 budget to be read by the minister for finance Ken Ofori Atta on Thursday has more hope for infrastructural development.

“The 2019 budget will capture infrastructure as the major focus for the 3rd year of NPP’s administration. We will allocate a chunk of our gross domestic product (GDP) towards infrastructural development in the country.”
