Communications team member of the National Democratic Congress [NDC], Sammy Gyamfi, has said that President Akufo-Addo’s Thursday night address on the controversial military deal between Ghana and the United States was an empty one.
Mr. Gyamfi said the President’s speech on the matter was not different from what his Defence Minister, Dominic Nitiwul, made some time back and therefore amounts to nothing new.

“Akufo Addo only came to insult us and said nothing new. I think his defence minister, Nitiwul’s stance on the military deal was far better than Nana Addo’s address because it was empty”, he said.
Sammy Gyamfi was speaking on Adom TV’s Morning Show, “Badwam”, Friday.
The President finally broke the ‘long-held silence’ on the ongoing debate on the defense deal with an address to the nation Thursday evening in which he touched on critical areas of concern that have been raised by the citizenry in relation to the subject.

In his speech, President Akufo-Addo clarified that Ghana has “not offered a military base, and will not offer a military base to the United States of America.”
According to him, no such request would even have been considered by government if any had been made by the US government.
He was rather confident that the agreement “will help enhance our defence capability, and offer an important layer of support in our common effort to protect the peace in our region.”
He, among other things, also criticized the his political opponent’s reaction to the decision since its announcement.

But touching on the issue, the NDC communicator said the President’s speech was one that lacked substance.
He indicated that the address was, among other things, an attempt to ‘get back’ at the NDC for their vehement opposition to the agreement and their constant show of disapproval for same.
“Nana Addo was not fair to us. He only addressed us in order to get back at us and insult us mercilessly. It’s very bad and I can assure you that nothing or no one will stop us from protesting the deal”, he noted.
