Member of Parliament for Effutu Constituency, Alexander Afenyo Markin, has been fingered for being behind the disturbances that occurred in the University of Education, Winneba.

Founder of Challenging Heights, James Kofi Annan, is accusing Mr Markin of fabricating stories against the new Vice Chancellor of the University, Rev. Father Afful-Broni.

According to him, the MP’s hatred for the VC stems from the fact that he has refused to do the bidding of the MP as the MP wants to take over contracts and recruitments as well as procurement issues at the University.

“Afenyo Markin is not the kind of MP the people need because he has taken over the UEW because of his status and is giving contracts to his cohorts. He is responsible for all the troubles in Winneba now,” he alleged.

The students say the decision by the acting VC, Rev. Fr. Prof. Anthony Afful-Broni to suspend some lecturers is borne out of personal vendetta.

About 30 teaching and non-teaching staff of the
university have been sacked by the VC for engaging in acts he considers to have
brought the name of the university into disrepute.

But Mr. Annan who claims to be friends with the MP told Asempa FM’s Ekosii Sen that Mr Markin wants the VC to bend the rules in giving contracts to his cronies in breach of procurement standards.

He also alleged that the MP has been instigating the transfer of some staff he considers as threat to his political ambition.
